The leaves fluttered (飘扬)over John’s head. He liked to watch the colors of the trees shine through the sunlight. It was the same color as his trumpet. John smiled when he thought of the music the leaves made. He looked at his watch; his father would meet him in a few minutes for their first practice in the park.
John and his family lived in an apartment building. He began playing his trumpet in his own living room two weeks ago. Then the family next door had a new baby. “John, are you ready?” pulling him out of his daydream, his father sat down and began to play his trumpet.
John looked up at a golden tree. The leaves seemed to be dancing with the tune. He felt excited as he watched the people walking by and smiling at his father. He wanted to play like that! Did you take an “e-mail 101” class before getting your e-mail account? Probably not. No training is required to get an e-mail account these days. Many e-mail users get started without really knowing how to use the technology properly.
Unfortunately, this lack of e-mail know-how leads to a large list of problems. (堵塞) mailboxes. And for a variety of reasons, we’re often unable to send or receive messages. Wouldn’t e-mail be much easier to use if everyone followed a few simple guidelines? Yes, indeed!

The sounds made by a killer whale in one part of the ocean may be very different from the sounds of a killer whale from another area in the sea, much as people from the southern United States sound different from New Englanders.
David Bain studies the underwater utterings of two killer whales a, in California. In spite of their different dialects, he says the mammals(哺乳动物) learned to communicate with one another by finally learning to make each other’s sounds.
Researcher Bain says, “There’s a lot of information in the tone of voice, how they say it, you can get a sense of if they're being angry or not. Yes, they do have a tone of voice.”
Researchers are uncertain to call the sounds language, but the sounds clearly do help whales communicate with other whales and other mammals may even be picking up on it.
The ability of whales and dolphins to imitate (copy) sounds helps develop something of a cross-species language. When the dolphin Bayou was separated from the Orca, Yaka, Bayou began uttering Orca like sounds, probably to get the whale’s attention.
Brenda McCowan tries to compare dolphins’ behavior with their whistles like sounds. By recording the sound patterns, she’s also come up with what looks like a general vocabulary. She says, “We found about 102 whistle types on the whole. Their whistle types are made up of that.”
Although she is still not sure what any of it means, “We just don’t know yet. We’re slowly trying to pull apart the pieces, use of imitation, the importance of how whistles are organized, to find out how difficult it is.”
Researchers may be years away from learning what every fish in the ocean already knows. When the killer whale speaks, you’d better jump...

Nike, a major United States sportswear company, has spent the last several years doing some serious searching. In other words, the company wants your smelly, old sneakers. Why would anyone want dirty, worn-out shoes? The material used to make most sneakers can be bent easily. Nike, in its “Reuse-a-Shoe” program, uses this soft, shock-absorbent material for creating playgrounds and high-performance sports surfaces, which can help protect sportsmen from being hurt.
People are encouraged to drop off their unwanted shoes at one of the company’s collection spots. The company provides local shops, community agencies (社区组织), and school groups with tools to promote the collection effort. These tools include posters, radio, and print advertisements. Any used shoes are welcomed as long as they do not have metal parts. After about five thousand pairs of shoes have been collected, Nike takes them to the company’s recycling plant in Oregon. Since 1993, millions of pairs of shoes have been recycled. The company presently has more than 50 collection spots located throughout 35 states and similar collection programs in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan.
After the shoes arrive in Oregon, they are cut into thin pieces and separated into three sections: the top, the middle shoe, and the outer sole. These parts are broken up into tiny pellets(颗粒). The small pieces are then cleaned and sent to partner companies to be made into athletic surfaces.
Pellets made from the fabric or leather tops of the collected shoes are used to make padding(填充物) that goes directly under hardwood basketball floors. The middle of them is used to make basketball courts, tennis courts, and soft playground surfaces. The pellets made from the heavy rubber bottoms, or soles, of them are made into football and baseball fields, and running tracks.
Each year Nike selects neighborhoods that could benefit from having new sports surfaces. So far, the company has helped build more than 170 sports surfaces in communities around the world.
Because Nike reduced the amount of waste and provided communities with safe playgrounds and excellent sports surfaces, it has received many awards from the recycling community. The company finally plans to recycle old sneakers into brand-new sneakers, but for now, they are pleased to partner with other companies who help to put all those old shoes to good use.
(   ) 49. The underlined words “shock-absorbent material” is a kind of material that is used to ________.

A. count the exact numbers of shoes that are collected
B. separate the shoes according to size and condition

Cats are very smart. They are one of the smartest of all animals. The brain of a cat is large and highly developed. This may be why cats have good memories. Cats remember kindness. So it is a good idea to treat a cat well. Cats can “speak” too. They meow for attention. Often they stand by a door, meowing. Then they look over their shoulders, waiting to see if you are coming. Cats also make other noises. They purr when they are happy and hiss when they are angry.
Cats have a lot of pride. They usually will not do silly tricks. They seem to know what is beneath them. And think they are too good to do the tricks. Almost all cats want to have their own way. They are mostly true to only one person—if to anyone. They don’t switch (改变) loyalty easily. This is different from dogs. Dogs will switch their loyalty. Cats want to be free in the wild. They like to be their own masters. When a cat is left alone, it can go back to caring for itself. It can live in the wild again.
With kindness, a cat can be trained. Cats can learn to do many things. Some cats can learn to open doors. Some can ring doorbells. Some can even turn on water. Then they take a drink. Cats are very smart, though. Here is what they do before drinking. They put a paw in the water. They test whether the water is hot or cold.
