The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.

Write your response in about 200 words in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue. 很明显:给定材料的summary(以下简称summary)和你自己的view(以下简称comments)是考试的两个最核心的部分!

Conclusion

Background+ Summary

Comments

Conclusion

Background

Summary

Comments

Conclusion

Background

1.   Family education may exert a great impact on children’s behavior.

2.   The past several years has witnessed the widespread use of genetically modified food.

3.   Learning math plays an important role in everyday life.

4.   This issue has captured a great deal of attention from the general public.

5.   Children’s education has recently arisen as one of the essential problems.

比如:Recently, the use of Chinese characters, traditional or simplified, has attracted a great deal of attention from politicians and scholars alike. (21 words)

Summary

(1)     There has been much controversy over _______.

(2)     When it comes to _______, opinions vary greatly.

(3)     ____ has given rise to a heated discussion.

(4)     A heated debate has sprung up on ______.

(5)     _______ has caused quite a stir among the general public.

Some people argue/suggest/insist that _______.

On the contrary, other believe/maintain that ______.

1.       不要把材料里的所有观点都写入总结;

2.       只需要提炼材料里的Key Words,然后组成句子;

3.       篇幅占约1/3;

4.       不要完全照抄材料,进行一定的替换,包括词语替换、句式替换;

With regards to the controversial issue of whether we should revive traditional characters or continue using simplified ones, opinions vary greatly. Some people believe that traditional characters can better represent traditional culture, help to interpret ancient Chinese works, and unite Chinese people from all over the world. On the contrary, others argue that the simplified form, which is easier to learn and more convenient to use, can not only preserve traditional value but also lead to better communication. (78 words)

Comments

(1) When considering opinions of both sides, I am inclined to be in favor of the former/latter one.

(2) When considering opinions of both sides, I find they are of equal weight.

(1)Cause and Effect(逻辑展开)

(2)Counter-argument(辩论展开)

(3)Examples(例证展开)

比如:There is no surprise that there are different opinions about the use of characters. However, as a college student, I am convinced that we should keep the simplified characters. It is generally acknowledged that in mainland China simplified characters have been extensively applied in school education as well as in our daily life. If we instead promote the use of traditional characters, there would be language chaos in our country. Besides, efforts should be made to maintain the simplified form among Chinese people, since it is used by overwhelmingly large population. (91 words)

To sum up, it is the simplified characters that we should advocate to use. Traditional ones should be left for the experts to study, not for the general public. (29 words)

Traditional or Simplified Characters?

或者Is it Necessary to Revive Traditional Chinese Characters?

Term-time holidays will be banned

Parents are to be banned by Michael Gove, UK's Education Secretary, from taking their children out of school to save money on holiday.

He is to abolish the right of head teachers to 'authorise absence' from the classroom, which has been used to let families take term-time breaks, and will warn them they face fines for their children not being at school.

'Any time out of school has the potential to damage a child's education,' a senior source at the Department for Education said this weekend. 'That is why the government will end the distinction between authorised and unauthorised absence.'

'This is part of the government's wider commitment to bring down truancy levels in our school. There will also be stricter penalties for parents and schools.'

This tough measures on truancy are part of a wider attempt by Mr Gove to make education more academically rigorous and to tackle a culture in the educational establishment which he believes has accepted 'excuses for failure'.

Russell Hobby, the general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said the measure would discourage parents from trying to put pressure on heads to sanction term time holiday. 'The high cost of holidays outside of term time is still an issue but ultimately a child's education is more important than a holiday,' he said.

When it comes to whether parents should take their children to spend holidays during term-time in UK, opinions vary greatly. Parents believe that by doing so, they can save a lot of money on holidays. Educational officials strongly oppose this proposition, claiming that it encourages truancy, which in turn damages a child’s education.

There is no surprise that there are different opinions about term-time holiday, since these views are based on different grounds. However, I personally argue that the merits of prohibiting truancy during term-time considerably outweigh the drawbacks. To begin with, the absence from school during term-time will break the learning process and adversely influence the children’s academic performance. The students may act poorly or even fail in the exams. To help children keep up with those who excel in the class, parents may spend extra cost, even a large sum of money considering the current market, to hire personal tutors. In the long run, parents will spend a lot more money than saved.

Secondly, taking tough measures on school regulation is of great necessity. By definitely abolishing the right of head teachers to “authorize absence” from the classroom, those teachers can concentrate on their teaching. Without strict penalties, those parents would take a holiday leave for granted, which will dramatically increase truancy.

All in all, term-time holidays have an obviously harmful effect on children’s education. The ban on these holidays is justified and can help students keep a steady progress of their education.

Wechat, a newly emerging social networking application, has become more and more popular among the young people in China and overseas countries. According to the official report, the typical user group of WeChat is likely to be young, urban and male. Male users account for 63% and the majority of them are between 20s-30s. In terms of occupation, college students make the greatest contribution, followed by users coming from IT industry and white-collars. Results show most young people like using WeChat because it brings convenience to their life and study. Young people connect their friends, families, teachers or strangers more closely and freely. The platform is now offering more systematic, coherent and welll-rounded information. More updated information can also be acquired via WeChat. Others say that WeChat is also a good way to release stress and relaxation.

Recently, a famous recruitment website in China, has released the results of a survey on mobile phone use among over 10,000 undergraduates from 28 cities in China. Nearly 86% of the students admitted a severe addiction to their phone. Some students are addicted to chatting on WeChat, so they lose interest in learning. They waste precious time in chatting, which leads to a decline in academic performance. Besides, they spend less and less time in taking part in extracurricular activities, thus ignoring the face to face communication in real life. What is worse, WeChat can shake to strangers, and some criminals will spread fraud information, which brings danger to our life. Experts said the main purpose of WeChat is entertainment and web browsing. They don't recommend children to start their reading on WeChat as its tendency to disperse children's attention is not beneficial in shaping good reading habits for them.

In recent years, Wechat has exerted profound influence on people’s life. As an instant message tool, Wechat provides people with access to the acquisition of knowledge.

With regard to the controversial issue on whether Wechat contributes to undergraduates’ acquisition of knowledge, opinions vary greatly. Many young adults, particularly males, maintain that Wechat enjoys great popularity among people from various walks of life, fascinating their life and study, narrowing the distance between them and offering them rich sources of information. However, others argue that by indulging themselves in chatting on Wechat, many students suffer from poor academic performance as well as poor reading habits, neglect face-to-face contact and involve themselves in false information.

Weighing both the pros and cons of Wechat, I insist that Wechat is unreliable access to acquiring knowledge.

Genetically modified foods have exerted a huge impact on our life, which causes quite a stir in the society. There is much controversy over whether this kind of food is a boon or a bane. Some people argue that compared with the ordinary counterparts, genetically modified foods need fewer pesticides, grow much healthily under harsh conditions, and keep fresh for a longer time. However, others hold that such foods, which are produced in an unnatural way, can lead to high risks of developing certain diseases and may even have long-term effects on our body.

When considering the opinions from both sides, one cannot deny that different views are based on different grounds. To the best of my knowledge, the disadvantages of consuming genetically modified food truly outweigh the advantages. My reasons are as follows. To begin with, it is much better to keep away from the foods that may have harmful effects. It is universally acknowledge that health is the first wealth. As far as the situation is concerned, the scientists are unable to determine whether genetically modified foods have potential detrimental influence. If we buy and try this food, we might contract certain serious disease in the future. What is worst, the disease may be new and cannot be treated easily with current technology. Secondly, one may suggest such foods are conducive to the agriculture and can help save a lot of funds. Nevertheless, our country should consider how much money it would pay if the foods are truly harmful to our health.

Given the factors I have just outline, genetically modified foods should not be extensively advocated. Scientists should still do their utmost to ensure such foods are safe.

Is International Tourism Beneficial?

News has reported that Australia tourism has experienced significant growth across a number of Asian markets with China remaining Australia’s biggest market outside of New Zealand, the latest International Visitor Survey (IVS) showed.

Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb on Wednesday welcomed the results, saying tourism industry is vital in providing jobs for the Australians.

“Tourism is Australia’s largest services export. The jobs of over 929,000 Australians are linked to tourism and the Coalition Government is committed to supporting tourism as a key job creation industry,” Robb said.

These latest figures show that China is still Australia’s largest market, outside of New Zealand, with Chinese visitors increasing their expenditure in the Australian economy to 5.1 billion AU dollars (4.73 billion U.S. dollars), while we also remain very competitive in the challenging United States tourism market,” he said.

However, with the booming of such overseas tourism, visitor behaviours can have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of the host community. For example, crowding and congestion, drugs and alcohol problems, prostitution and increased crime levels can occur. Tourism can even infringe on human rights, with local being displaced from their land to make way for new hotels or barred from beaches. Interaction with tourists can also lead to an erosion of traditional cultures and values.

International tourism has become increasingly popular in Australia nowadays. With regard to the influence of this booming tourism, people’s views are widely divided. Some people believe such kind of travel is beneficial in terms of providing jobs and enhancing trade. However, others argue that this has a negative impact on the locals when it comes to potential crimes and local entitlements.

Read carefully the following excerpt on the potential risks of WeChat, and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should:

·    summarize the main message of the excerpt, and then

·    comment on what we should do to prevent the harmful effect of WeChat.

Potential Risks of WeChat

WeChat’s positioning function may bring potential risks to young people when they socialize with strangers. No one can deny the fact that it is very dangerous to let strangers know clearly our location since we do not know who they are and what they might do. In addition, the image and name of WeChat’s ID can be changed randomly. Criminals can change their images and names into yours and then it is quite possible for your friends to be cheated. What’s more, the wallet function of WeChat may bring about potential financial risks. Criminals may make use of these functions and steal the money in your WeChat wallet.

Nowadays, WeChat has gained popularity and exerted a huge impact on our life.Among the general public, there is a growing concern about the potential drawback of WeChat, especially in terms of personal security. Some people claim that WeChat may expose one’s location to strangers by positioning function, cheat one’s friends by faking identity, and lose one’s money in the electronic wallet.

As far as I am concerned, while embracing the convenience of WeChat, we have to take measures to guard against its potential risks.To begin with, we could disable the positioning function to protect ourselves being detected; by requesting an audio or video clip, we could confirm our friend’s identity; and minimizing the amount of money in the WeChat account will definitely prevent one from a huge loss. Furthermore, it is noted that WeChat pays much attention to privacy. For example, if someone comments on your photo, nobody but mutual friends can see the messages. In this way, if we do not add strangers, we can keep our information safe and secure.

In spite of the drawbacks, it goes to extreme to abandon an invention. As long as we are aware of the risks which are inherent in the software, we can safely enjoy the surprise brought by recently technological advancement.

Should students take a gap year to travel or work after finishing high school or go to university directly? This has been an intensely discussed question for years. The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinion. Read carefully the opinion from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.

Traditionally, students choose to go to university directly after graduating from high school. However, taking a gap year to travel or work has gained a growing popularity among high school graduates in recent years.

Opinions vary greatly when it comes to whether students should take a gap year upon completing high school educationSome advocate that taking a gap year can help students better understand the world, enrich their social experience, and think clearly about their own career prospect. On the contrary, the opponents argue that during the gap year, students’ safety may be at risk, financial situation under stress, and their career in trouble.

As the saying goes, “Every coin has its two sides”. There is no surprise that there remains a dispute about taking a gap year. However, as a college student, I am convinced that the advantages of taking a gap year will far outweigh the disadvantagesFirst and foremost, travelling or working can help students learn practical knowledge which would not be taught in school. Simultaneously, they will find out what they are lacking, which in turn aid in having greater control over their future studies. In addition, with information on the Internet, students’ curiosity will drive them to explore the unknown world. Interest is the best teacher.

All in all, I firmly believe it is high time that we should advocate this lifestyle. We grown-ups should have our rights to choose our own lives.

With the development of science and technology, especially the extensive utilization of the Internet, various kinds of new inventions and phenomena have appeared and many new words have emerged. The coined new words are prevalent among young students and the Internet users, but experts worry about their adverse effect on standard language. Should people create and widely use the coined Internet buzzwords? Read carefully the opinion from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.

Internet has become an indispensable part of our life, and in recent years, an increasing number of buzzwords emerged into our vision.Many people regard these Internet buzzwords as shining stars, adding creativity and vitality to our language, and leading to more effective communication among young people. However, defenders of traditional language hold that Internet buzzwords are likely to get in the way of young people’s learning of standard language and can be difficult to understand for the elder generation.

As far as I am concerned, while Internet buzzwords make some difference to our culture, they cannot become the mainstream of our culture. Internet buzzwords do make our communication funnier and more vivid. But they only enjoy a high popularity among students and youngsters, and cannot be accepted by the majority. Although Internet buzzwords bring a sense of novelty among users, they cannot be fully understood by all people in real life. Some of these words are beyond our acceptability and are confusing to comprehend. Moreover, such informal language may have adverse effect on the sound development of our language and culture if used in news and formal documents.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that as the younger generation, we should assume the responsibility to purify our standard and maintain cultural purity. In this way, we should not widely use the Internet buzzwords without limits.

COMPOSITION

Recent surveys show that a lot of college students download papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing the assignments. This kind of academic dishonesty does harm to the students. You are required to analyze its harmful effects and suggest some ways to prevent it.

Write on ANSWER SHEET THREE a composition of about 200 words.

It is shown in the recent surveys that many college students copy papers from the Internet to save the trouble of doing their assignments. In my opinion, this kind of academic dishonesty is very harmful to these students.

First, copying papers from the Internet makes students lazy. Copying papers from the Internet seems easy and can save some time and trouble; therefore, students will do this more frequently and seldom work hard to complete their papers on their own. In other words, students will become lazier and lazier. Second, students can learn little from copying other’s work. Students cannot improve their abilities just by downloading paper from the Internet without their own thinking and working. What’s worse, once students get used to academic cheating, they may also cheat in other cases in the future, which will be very dangerous for them, especially when it is put down in the honesty record.

Therefore, in order to prevent academic dishonesty on campus, some punishments by the school may be necessary. But the most important thing is that teachers should talk to those students, and make them aware of the fact that copying other’s work cannot bring them any knowledge and that only by working hard can they improve themselves.

Nowadays, with the growing popularity of computers, more and more people are paying less and less attention to their handwriting. Look at the following picture carefully and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should describe the drawing briefly, interpret its intended meaning, and give your comments.

This picture captures a critical moment that a man is having difficulty writing something on the paper with a pen. But because he has got used to writing with a mouse, he is so embarrassed that he does not know how to write with traditional writing tool.

Simple as it is, what the picture is trying to convey is though-provoking: overdependence on computer leads to our forgetting of words. On the one hand,this phenomenon is not uncommon among young people. Nowadays, it is really no big deal for them to design a delicate resume or write and edit a document with a computer. When they are asked to write something with a pen, they may either write poorly or even forget how to write. On the other hand, people are becoming more and more dependent on computer, thus they write worse and worse. Many people consider handwriting no longer practical. With the help of a computer, it does not matter whether your handwriting is good or not. Actually, people today rarely pick up a pen to write anything.

To solve this problem, we must open handwriting courses in schools of all level. Many other Asian countries have listed handwriting as a required course. As Chinese descendants, there is no reason for us not to learn to write Chinese well.
