#WSC Daily:《

If we were to choose the hottest series to come from around the world in the last five years, HBO's 'Game of Thrones' deserves it. According to George R. R. Martin, author of the original 'Game of Thrones,' he drew on a range of historical sources in writing the fantasy novel, but the story's prototype is 'closest' to England's 15th century War of the Roses. The Wars of the Roses took place in England from 1455-1485 A.D., before the establishment of the powerful Tudor government. It was a series of dynastic civil wars that took place between the House of Lancaster and the House of York for the throne of England, which lasted 30 years. The two houses in conflict with one another in the War of the Roses were the House of York and the House of Lancaster. The names of the War of Roses comes from the symbols associated with the two families; the white rose belonging to the Yorks and the red rose to the Lancasters. In Game of Thrones , the House of Lancaster is thought to be the Lannisters while the House of York, the Starks. Like the Starks the York were northerners, while the Lancasters, like the Lannisters, were from the south.

The issue of succession after the death of Edward III in 1377 was the root cause of the Wars of the Roses. Although Edward's succession seemed secure, at the end of his reign, the 'direct line of descent suddenly shrank'. Edward's eldest son, the Duke of Cornwall (also known as Edward, the Black Prince), and prospective heir, Edward, predeceased his father. According to the principle of succession, it was Edward III's eldest son, the 10-year-old Charles II, Edward the Black Prince, who should succeed to the throne. The young Richard II was deprived of the throne in 1399 by his cousin, Edward III's third son, the Duke of Lancaster (Henry IV), which brought the House of Lancaster to power. The rule of the House of Lancaster lasted until 1422, when Henry V's son Henry VI became king. Henry VI was a lethargic and incompetent king, and suffered from intermittent mental illness. The legitimacy of the Lancastrian throne was questioned. Meanwhile, the descendants of Edward III's fourth son, the Duke of York, or the House of York, believed they had a stronger claim to the throne. With the rise of popular discontent, the creation of private armies of feudal nobles, and the corruption of Henry VI's court, civil war broke out in such an atmosphere.

Besides, Game of Thrones draws upon another dominant theme in the Wars of the Roses: its sheer, inescapable brutality. We're all glad we don't live in a world quite as violent and terrifying as the one depicted in Game of Thrones. Few of its people are granted the pleasure of a comfortable death, wars and struggle are constant realities. Can you imagine that the brutal war scenes in the drama with blood and flesh are really happened? For instance, the battle of Towton in 1461, for example, is considered the bloodiest single clash to have taken place on British soil, with the hacked and smashed remains of forgotten men-at-arms still being exhumed by archaeologists.  In ancient times, many horrific wars were caused by unclear principles of succession to the throne, could this happen in modern times? What does this tell us?
