英文论文中，尤其是科技论文，数字表达是在所难免的。有一些大家共同遵守的规则，总结如下：
1，西方有两本关于编辑出版和写作的权威指导书——Associated Press Stylebook和Chicago Manual of Style。前者认为10以下用文字，大于或等于10用阿拉伯数字。而后者认为1-99用文字，大于99用阿拉伯数字。
如果数字并列出现，那么无论数字是否小于10，最好能保持一致。
例：She has four brothers aged 5, 7 ,12, and 15.
2，句子开头必须用文字。
例如：Twenty-three hundred sixty-one victims were hospitalized.
Nineteen fifty-six was quite a year.
Associated Press Stylebook认为年份可以例外。
例如： 1956 was quite a year.
3，21-99用连字符
例如：
Forty-three people were injured in the train wreck.
Twenty-seven of them were hospitalized.
4，分数用连字符
例如：
We recovered about two-thirds of the stolen cash.
One-half is slightly less than five-eighths.
5，超过4位的数字用逗号隔开，从右往左数，每隔三个数字一个逗号，小数点后的不算。
例如：
1,054 people
$2,417,592.21
6，小于1刀的钱不建议用分数表示
例如：
不推荐：: He had only $0.60.
可用:
He had only sixty cents.
或
He had only 60 cents.
7，一般用数字表示时间
例如：
The flight leaves at 6:22 a.m.
Please arrive by 12:30 sharp.
但是也可用文字，一般整点用文字。
例如：
She takes the four thirty-five train.
The baby wakes up at five o'clock in the morning.
8，带分数用数字，除非在句首
例如：
We expect a 5 1/2 percent wage increase.
Five and one-half percent was the expected wage increase.
9，大数字用最简单的表达
例如: twenty-three hundred (simpler than two thousand three hundred)
10，分数一般用数字表达，在小数点前加0。
例如：
The plant grew 0.79 inches last year.
The plant grew only 0.07 inches this year.
11，年代一般用文字，且不大写
例如：
During the eighties and nineties, the U.S. economy grew.
12，年代用数字时，在数字前加撇号，或在s前加撇号
例如：During the '80s and '90s, the U.S. economy grew.
During the 80's and 90's, the U.S. economy grew.
或者用年加s
During the 1980s and 1990s, the U.S. economy grew.
13，做主语，宾语，定语，表语同位语时，一般用文字
The two happily opened the box.(作主语)
I need six altogether.(作宾语)
She has nine dictionaries.(作定语)
We are five.(作表语)
They three tried to finish the task before sunset.(作同位语)
