Prague

Nietzsche said:“When I think of a word to express the music, I found the Vienna; When I think of a word to express the mystery, I found the Prague.” Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and the largest city in the country, the state Bohemia, the Vltava River. The city is located in the center of Europe. It is called one of the world's most beautiful cities. Since 1992 Prague has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites. In particular, Prague is the first whole city was designated as a World Heritage Site.

Prague Spring

Prague fell during the World War II. After the World War II, Soviet army entered Prague and liberated Czech. The Communists took over the Prague regime since then, people became resented under high pressure of the Soviet Communist Party. Prague spring is reform of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Its main content are as following: reduce the Communist Party centralize power on major issues; each major position is no longer held by one person, implement a pluralistic political system; strengthen the role of the market in the economic system; Change the country to the Federal Republic of Czech and Slovakia. This reform weakened the control of the Soviet Union, so the Soviet Union captured the Czechoslovakia. Prague spring made people become disappointed at the Soviet Union's 'Lenin - Stalin' model. People realized that there couldn’t exist a pattern of democratic opposition to the Soviet Union for socialism under Soviet control.

Old Town Square

Prague boasts hundreds of architectural landmarks. Spared destruction in World War II, much of Prague’s historical center was declared a World Heritage site in 1992. Heavenly firmament: A baroque ceiling of religious frescoes and elaborate stucco work celebrates the world of religion in the Theological Library at Prague’s Strahov Monastery. A city gem, Prague’s colorful Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti) dates to the 12th century. A busy marketplace in medieval times, the square became the city’s social center.

Charles Bridge

Like apparitions from bygone days, Prague residents stroll across fog-shrouded Charles Bridge, the local landmark that has served the city’s inhabitants since the 14th century. As peaceful and romantic it may seem, the Vtlava (Moldau) River has not always been as calm as it looks today. It’s fury, combined with the power of heavy rains have many times flooded and destroyed the bridges people built over it. Charles Bridge is no exception. It has many times been the victim of floods and natural or human created calamities. Nevertheless, it is still standing and it will remain a symbol of Prague. The bridge is decorated with 30 statues and statuaries, most of them Baroque style.

Golden Lane

You shouldn’t miss the Golden Lane (Zlata Ulicka) in the complex of Prague Castle. Golden Lane got its name from the story of alchymists living in the street during the reign of Rudolf II who tried to make not only the philosopher stone or the elixir of youth, but also to transform metals into gold. Even though these stories are not based on the truth, there is a real story dating to the beginning of the 20th century. One of the local house was inhabited by an old man, who spent all his money on old books Souvenir shop about magic. He made secret experiments in his lab inside the house. In 1831 people in the Golden Lane heard a big detonation from his house. When fire fighters entered the house and distinguished fire, they found Uhle dead with a yellow stone in his hand. Later on the stone was proved to be gold. How the gold got into the house is still not known. Maybe he really made his and many other alchymists’ longtime dream come true. One of the famous inhabitants of this street was famous writer Franz Kafka in house no. 22 or Prague prophetess Madame de Thebes, who was killed by the Gestapo in the war because she foretold the end of Nazism.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Kafka, the master of western modernist literature, was born in Prague. He graduated from the University of Prague.The main works are novel 'Trial', 'Castle', 'Metamorphosis'. Most of his works is filled with the image of distortion and methods of intuition, and show isolation because of being surrounded by a hostile social environment.

Milan Kundera used to live in the Prague, his unique novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being about two women, two men, a dog and their lives in the 1968 Prague Spring period of Czechoslovak history is a philosophical novel about sex and love, and it used to be adapted into a movie. The Unbearable Lightness of Being told stories among several characters, they went through things that seemed light and small, but gained something huge and significant form them and finally sacrificed their lives for faith.

Gallery

As the geographical centre of Europe, Prague doesn’t remain behind even at the category of galleries and art exhibitions. The city of a hundred spires (even if in reality the number is much higher) is a very rich cultural centre and it offers tons of options for any range of art lovers.

There is no specific rule as for where you will find one gallery or the other, nevertheless, most of them are situated in the city centre, so it won’t be difficult to get from one to another. The most interesting short-term galleries are advertised all over Prague, especially in trams, underground stations and public places.

Musical Club

Prague, mother of many well known musicians, pulsates wildly with all night and day musical life for many centuries. There are various musical clubs and every club has its own spirit, its own manner and unique decorations.

Czech beer is perfect. Czechs love beer. They hold a world primacy in drinking it. Beer firstly has a really long tradition here, it tastes well and it is cheap.

Traditional Czech food is not exactly what one would call dietary, however it perfectly goes with the flavourful Czech beer. It mostly consists of pork or beef meat with sauce and a side dish, the most common and liked being dumplings. Dumplings are the Czech traditional side dish made from wheat or potato flour, boiled in water as a roll and then sliced and served hot. Famous are the Czech Pancakes, filled with ice-cream, jam or fruits and coated in whipped-cream, almonds or sugar.
