1. Teaching aims
1) Knowledge aim
By the end of this lesson, students will have a better understanding of the passage, and the structure of the text. Know the basic knowledge about earthquakes.
To help the students master the usage of important words, phrases and sentence patterns, especially the attributive clauses. Guide the students to use these vocabularies and sentence patterns to describe a disaster.
2) Ability aim
The students can use what we have learned to describe what would happen before–during–after the earthquake. Improve the ability of reading skill and use English to express ones ideas.
3) Emotional aim
Get the students to be aware of the terrible disasters. Meanwhile get them to face it, treat it in a proper way, and never get discouraged.
2. Important and difficult points
(1)Important point
The students asked to acquire some knowledge about earthquakes.
Let the students know what a correct attitude towards a disaster is and what we should do in a disaster for ourselves and for the other people.
(2)Difficult point
Using the learned phrases and sentence patterns to express one’s ideas.
3. Teaching and learning methods

4. Teaching procedures
Step 1: Lead in
At the beginning of the class, I will guide the students to kook at the following pictures on the PowerPoint. Then ask the students what words they would like to use to describe them.Students will reply: active/busy and so on. Then I will ask students to discuss another question: If there is an earthquake, what would happen after the earthquake in the two places? Then ask some students to speak out their ideas.
Step 2: Pre-Reading
In this step, I will give students a situation: Imagine your home begins to shake, what do you think may happen before it? Then lead students to get into the topic about this lesson.
Step 3: While-Reading
Part 1: Fast reading.
Activity1: Skimming
First I will ask students to read the passage quickly for the first time. After that They need to answer two questions. The first one is how many parts this passage can be divided into. And what are they? The second question is what’s the clue of this story? Guide the students give the right answer.
Activity2: Scanning
I will ask students to read the passage for the second time. They are require to find out the topic sentence in each paragraph. Then fill out the blank and the table. I will check the answer with the whole class.
Part 2: Intensive reading
In this part, students will ask to read the passage carefully, and try to conclude the details about what had happened before–during–after the earthquake. Make a time line of the event.Then I will ask the students to think about two questions. At the same time, I will write down the new words which the students are unfamiliar with, then explain them in various ways. Students can discuss in groups.
Step 4: Post-Reading
Activity1: True or false
Students finish the exercises of True or false on the PowerPoint. They should refer to the passage and choose the right one. Then I will check the answer one by one.
Activity2: Acting out an interview
Get the students into groups to act out an interview between a reporter and a survivor from the Tangshan earthquake. One student acts as a reporter, and the other acts as a survivor. Then I will invite some students to show it in front of the classroom.
Step 5: Summary and homework
1. Summary:
Students summarize what we have learned today. Meanwhile, teacher will give some supplements.
2. Homework:
First, write a short paragraph to describe what had happened before-
during-after the earthquake using your own words; Second, Surf the Inter
net to learn more about how to protect yourself and people if an earthquake happen .
