飞天是全人类共同的心愿。在《逍遥游》中，庄子以汪洋恣肆的笔触，描绘了生命由深水向苍穹升腾的历程。现代学者也构想出一位名叫“万户”（Wan Hoo）的中国勇士，试图借助烟花的推力和大风的扬力飞往太空。虽然万户的星辰之旅失败了，但他用生命搏击苍穹，敢上九天揽月的创举具有强烈的冲击力和感染力，这样的故事永远也不会老去。
在希腊神话中，同样有一个交织着梦想与渴望的悲剧故事。少年伊卡洛斯挥动蜡做的翅膀在天空中飞翔，他全身心沉醉于飞行的乐趣，不经意间越飞越高，结果太阳把他的翅膀融化了，烛泪滴落，少年如流星般下坠，被波涛汹涌的大海吞噬了生命。两千多年来，伊卡洛斯的飞翔和陨落一直令人们着迷，乃至融入了人类文明的基因之中，唤醒古往今来一代代人对于飞翔的神往。
这就是神话所具有的深远的文化意义，它引燃人的好奇心，在潜移默化中让我们继承英雄的信念。伊卡洛斯是文学艺术史上经久不衰的主题之一，有人赞美他的勇气，有人哀婉他的命运，也有人把他置于宏大的宇宙背景中，凸显出生与死的私人性：死亡可以轻而易举地带走一个人全部的期望，然而明日的太阳照常升起，宏阔的世界喧闹如初，对个体的挣扎与湮灭毫不在意。

在勃鲁盖尔的《伊卡鲁斯》里，比如说；一切是多么安闲地从那桩灾难转过脸：农夫或许听到了堕水的声音和那绝望的呼喊，但对于他，那不是了不得的失败；太阳依旧照着白腿落进绿波里；那华贵而精巧的船必曾看见一件怪事，从天上掉下一个男孩，但它有某地要去，仍静静的航行。
