在英语中，out 经常与 of 连用，产生的 out of 的用法不下于十个，可以用来表示位置，如 get out of bed，意为“起床”；可以表示来源，如 a house made out of wood，意为“用木头建造的房子”；可以表示缺少，如 out of milk，意为“缺少牛奶”；可以表示状态，如 out of trouble，意为“摆脱困劲”，等等。
其中学习 out of 最难的地方就是定冠词 the 的干扰，如 out of wood 和 out of the woods 的意思完全不一样，前者表示缺少木头或用木头制作，后者则表示从树林里出来，那么如何把握 the 的“度” 呢？
要弄清 out of 的用法，可以把 out of 所接的名词性成分分为两类，一是接具体名词，二是接抽象名词，此时两者的意思不同。
一、当 out of 接的是具体名词时，out of 表示的是物理位置的变化、脱离某机构、缺少某物或来源等。
1、当 out of 表示位置的变化时，名词常有定冠词 the 修饰，表示从某个地方离开或出来等，例如：He always takes a bunch of car keys out of his pocket and puts them on the desk when he arrives at company.他到公司时，总是从口袋里拿出一串车钥匙放在桌子上。
We got out of the car and stretched our legs.我们下车好好舒展了一下手脚。
2、当 out of 表示脱离或离开某机构时，名词常常是机构或单位等名词，例如：
She was edged out of the company by the new director. 新上任的经理一步步把她排挤出了公司。
He gets out of the army in a few weeks.几周之后他就要离开部队。
3、当 out of 表示缺少某物时，此时名词常常没有其他成分修饰，例如：
We're out of milk.我们没有牛奶了。
I've been out of work for six months since I quit.自从离职以来，我已经失业六个月了。
4、当 out of 表示来源时，可以某物来源或由某物或某人那里获得，例如：
Would you advise people to make a building out of wood or stone?你会建议人们用木材还是石头建房子呢？
The police will do whatever it takes to get the truth out of the suspect.警方将不惜一切代价从嫌疑犯那里弄清楚真相。
二、当 out of 接的是抽象名词时，此时名词常常没有定冠词修饰，表示不在原状态或原因等。
1、out of 表示不在原状态
You should stay out of trouble before the election.你应该在选举前避开麻烦。
The department is completely out of control since the department head left for a business trip.自从部门负责人出差后，这个部门完全失控了。
2、out of 表示原因
He asked about her educational background out of curiosity.出于好奇，他询问了她的教育背景。
He helped the old lady out of a sense of duty.他出于责任感帮助了这位老太太。
从以上分析可以看出，若 out of 所接的名词若被定冠词 the 修饰，则名词要么是地点名词，要么是什么机构等名词，然而 out of the blue 中的 blue 不是两者之一，因此它有其他意思，不能意为“没有蓝色”。
Out of the blue 是一个习语，意为”出乎意料；突然；晴天霹雳“，相当于 unexpectedly，例如：
His resignation came out of the blue.他突然辞职了。
She seemed so surprised by the news that it must have come out of the blue.她似乎对这个消息很惊讶，一定是出乎意料的。
