Coherence

【Discourse】

A text is coherent if the ideas or sentences fit together in a way that can be easily understood by the listener or reader. It is particularly important when teaching writing.

Coherence is not easy to teach because it involves the “relationships” between the ideas, this is not always achieved with language items.

Cohesion

【Discourse】

A text is cohesive if its parts are connected. This is achieved by using cohesive devices such as linking words or expressions.

Cohesion is quite easy to teach because it can be achieved by using words. It is important to remember that making a text COHESIVE does not make it COHERENT.

Colloquial

【Discourse】

Colloquial language is commonly used in an informal spoken context but not normally in writing.

“I’ll see you later then, after I grab some food.”
