而“make hamburger out of sb.”

Bill Gates" 11 Rules

In Bill Gates" Book for high school and college graduates, there is a list of 11 things they did not learn in school. In his book, Bill Gates talks about how feelgood, politically-correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this education set them up for failure in the real world.

The 11 things are:

1. Life is not fair, get used to it.

2. The world won"t care about your selfesteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.

3. You will not make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won"t be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.

4. If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn"t have tenure.

5. Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.

6. If you mess up, it"s not your parents" fault, so don"t whine about our mistakes, learn from them.

7. Before you were born, your parents weren"t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents" generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.

8. Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades; they"ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn"t bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life.

9. Life is not divided into semesters. You don"t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

10. Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

11. Be nice to nerds. Chances are you"ll end up working for one.

A Loss Turns Out to Be a Gain

As seniors, we were immersed in planning for life after graduation: resumes, job interviews and making good first impressions. Our professor told us about a friend who had used a creative approach when applying for a job. He had studied up on the firm and was granted an interview in another city.

On the big day, he arrived in a clean T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. When questioned about his unusually informal attire, he responded that he wanted to impress them with himself, not his clothes. The next time they saw him, he said, he would be wearing a suit. He was hired.

We all marveled at his bravery and ingenuity. A classmate asked the professor how the fellow had come up with such a brilliant plan.

“It was simple,” our professor replied, “On his trip to the interview the airline lost his luggage.”

Dinosaurs Prints

Hundreds of dinosaur prints have been discovered in the Jura mountains in the northwest of Switzerland, Swiss scientist Wolfgang Hug said. They are 152 million years old. In fact, more than 580 prints were found on a slab of limestone measuring 600 square meters in the Jura mountains. In total, almost 2,000 dinosaur prints have been found so far in this corner of Switzerland. Hug and his research team want the dinosaur-rich area to be added to the United Nations list of worldwide heritage sites.

The latest group of prints measure between 8 and 20 centimeters long. The prints were made by four-legged dinosaurs between 15 and 20 meters long and 2.5 meters high, and smaller two-legged dinosaurs. Hug said a group of scientists would study them and find the scientific value of the discovery by the end of 2005.

“This will allow us to ask the United Nations to protect these prints as part of the world’s heritage,” Hug said.

Hug and his fellow scientists want to create a Geopark to allow people to visit the pre-historic sites. In the past year 20,000 visitors have already showed up for a look at the prints.

Disguised Philanthropist

In a New York street a small truck loaded with glassware collided with a large truck laden with bricks, and practically all of the glassware was smashed. Considerable sympathy was felt for the driver as he gazed ruefully at the shattered fragments. A benevolent-looking old gentleman eyed him compassionately.

“My poor man,” he said, “I suppose you will have to make good this loss out of your own pocket?”

 “Yes,” was the melancholy reply.

“Well, well,” said the philanthropic old gentleman, “hold out your hat—here’s fifty cents for you, and I dare say some of the other people will give you a helping hand too.”

The driver held out his hat, over a hundred persons hastened to drop coins in it. At last, when the contributions had ceased, he emptied the contents of his hat into his pocket. Then, pointing to the retreating figure of the philanthropist who had started the collection, he observed: “Hey, maybe he isn’t the wise guy! That’s my boss!

The World Expo

The World Expo is a global event. Since its beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, it has helped people to exchange ideas and develop the world economy, culture, science and technology. So it is also called “the Olympic Games of Science and Technology.”

In 1851, London hosted the first World Expo. It lasted 160 days. At that time, Britain was the greatest power in the world. In order to display the power and pride of the country, the British built a special palace in Hyde Park to house the Expo. Ten countries exhibited products inside the palace.

In 1933, the United States hosted the World Expo with the theme “The Advances of a Century”. This was the first World Expo with a theme. Since then, every World Expo has had a theme.

Over one and a half centuries, the World Expo has developed into a top-class event. On December 3, 2002, Shanghai won its bid to host the 2010 World Expo. The theme is “Better City, Better Life”. This is the first time a developing country will hold such a great event.
