Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That's not rudeness—people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they're certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking. Nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London Underground is an ebook.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters. Since the launch of the iPhone in

2007, over 40 000—yes, that's 40 000—“apps”(programs downloaded for the iPhone) have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect timefillers. One “app” called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It's not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music—iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, ebooks and music aren't enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all these distractions, it's amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

56. Commuters on a London subway don't make eye contact because ______.

    A. the British are usually shy on the train

   B. the British law doesn't allow them to do so

   C. they are busy working on their laptops

   D. they are busy enjoying hightech distractions

57. All the following belong to “apps” except ______.

    A. iShoot                               B. Tube Exits

C. iPod                                        D. iSteam

58. IShoot features a function of ______.

    A. war games                        B. listening

C. writing                             D. guiding

59. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

     A. Seeing you have these timefillers, other commuters usually hesitate to bother you.

    B. Apple must have made much money by selling their products to commuters.

    C. IPod is not popular with the commuters of old age in London.

    D. With the timefillers, commuters usually miss their destinations.

答案及解析:

56D。由第二段的提问和回答以及下文的描述可知选D

57C。由第三至五段对apps的介绍可知iPod是与之并列的另一种产品。

58A。由第四段...iShoot, is a game that features tanks可知选A

59B。由文中人们都在使用这些产品,可推知Apple公司一定挣了很多的钱。

B

The market is a concept (概念,观念). If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the local manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steel worker or a truck driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas stations and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is buying your labor in the labor market.

The market may be something abstract(抽象的). But for each person or business who is making and selling something, it is very concrete. If nobody buys your tomatoes, it won't be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. It is telling you that you are using energies and resources in doing something the market doesn't want you to do.

60Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

ASelling and Buying

BEverything You Do Is Producing for the Market

CWhat Is the Market?

DWhat the Market Can Do for You

61All of the following acts are producing for the market except ______.

        A.working in a bank

Battending a night school

Cprinting a book

Dgrowing beans for sale

62You are buying from the market when you ______.

A.borrow a book from the library

Bdrive to the seaside for a holiday

        C.look after your children

Ddine (宴请) at a restaurant

63The word “concrete” in the last paragraph may most probably mean ______.

        A.serious           Bimportant

Cnecessary           Dreal

64In what way is the market very concrete for each person or business who is making and selling something?

AIt tells you what to produce.

BIt provides you with everything you need.

CIt tells you how to grow tomatoes.

DIt helps you save money.

答案及解析:

60C。由文章开头及全文介绍可知CWhat Is the Market?最佳。

61Batttending a night school不属于市场中的生产环节。

62Ddine at a restaurant属于购买的环节。

63Dconcreteabstract是相对的,即real最接近。

64A。由最后一段可知选A

C

Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won a Prize of Excellence from the American Club of Architects (建筑师)

On the shore of Sullivan's Island off the coast of South Carolina, the prizewinning beach house was built to replace one destroyed to pieces by Hurricane Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or pulling down 36 000 homes in the state.

Before Hugo, many new houses built along the shore were poorly constructed, and the instructions for building were not strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who

created the cleverlydesigned beach house. All new houses are required to follow stricter instructions after the terrible experience in Hugo. The new houses on this land should be able to stand a terrible hurricane with the strongest wind 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight, the house on the island look anything but hurricaneproof. Its redwood roof makes it look like “a large bright ball ” at night, according to one observer. But looks can be not true. The wooden formation of the house is supported with long steel sticks to give it huge strength. To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on wood pilings, part of which were buried in the sand. In fact, they are strong enough to bear the weight of the house. They also lift the house above the sea water brought by the hurricane. The pilings allow the sea water to run under the house instead of running into it. “These waves of water come ashore at sreat speed and cause most of the damage done to the beachfront buildings” said Huff.

65After the disaster caused by Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolina's shore line are required ______.

        A.to be easily constructed

        B.to look smarter in design

        C.to meet strict building standards

D.to be designed in the shape of a lamp

66Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground on wood pilings in order to ______.

A.put stronger pilings in the sand.

B.break huge sea waves into small ones.

C.stand the strong wind of about 200km/hr

D.prevent water from rushing into the house

67According to the passage, which statement CANNOT be true?

A.The report above was written in 1999, ten years after Hugo.

B.The house designed by Ray Huff lay on the coast of South Carolina.

C.When a hurricane strikes, waves of water come ashore at a great speed.

D.The formation of the new house can make it stand a terrible hurricane.

答案及解析:

65C。由第三段第二、三句可知所有房屋的建造都要符合严格的标准

66D。由最后一段第五句To further protect the house from hurricane damage...可知选项D正确。

67B。由文章第三段可知Ray Huff是一个建筑师(architect, who created the cleverlydesigned beach house),而不是一个设计师,故Bthe house designed by Ray Huff是错误的。

D

The most frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “I'm sorry, I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”

“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”

“I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”

I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, “What do all you people do

“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”

“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”

“That's good, sir.”

“How long will the computer be down” I wanted to know.

“I have no idea. Sometimes it's down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There's no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it's down it won't answer us.”

After the girl told me they had no backup(备用) computer, I said, “Let's forget the computer. What about your planes? They're still flying, aren't they

“I couldn't tell without asking the computer.”

“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he's flying to Washington, ” I suggested.

“I wouldn't know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket.”

“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours

“I wouldn't know, ” she said, pointing at the dark screen. “Only IT knows. It' can't tell me.”

By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.

68. The best title for the article is ______.

A. When the Computer Is Down

        B. The Most Frightening Words

C. The Computer of the Airport

D. Asking the Computer

69. What could the girl in the ticket office do for the passengers without asking the computer?

A. She could sell a ticket.

B. She could write out a ticket.

C. She could answer the passengers' questions.

D. She could do nothing.

70. Why do you think they had not a backup computer?

A. Because it was easy down.

B. Because it was very expensive.

C. Because it was not advanced enough.

D. Because it was not as big as the main computer.

71. The last paragraph suggests that ______.

A. a modern computer won't be down

B. computers can take the place of humans

C. sometimes a computer may bring suffering to people

D. there will be great changes in computers

答案及解析:

E

A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the selfmade man—the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual(体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

72. From paragraph 1, we can know that in America ______.

A. people tend to have a high opinion of the selfmade man

B. people can always rise to the top through their own efforts

C. college professors win great respect from common workers

D. people feel painful to mention their fathers as labors

73. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because ______.

A. servants in America are hard to get

B. she takes pride in what she can do herself

C. she can hardly afford servants

D. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food

74. The expression “ wait on table” in the second paragraph means “______”

A. work in a furniture shop

B. keep accounts for a bar

C. wait to lay the table

D. serve customers in a restaurant

75. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?

A. A Respectable Selfmade Family

B. American Attitude Toward Manual Labor

C. Characteristics of American Culture

D. The Development of Manual Labor

答案及解析:

本文介绍了崇尚自我奋斗,尊重体力劳动的美国文化。

72. A。细节题。 根据 A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the selfmade men...我们可以了解到,崇尚自我奋斗是美国文化的特点。

73. B。推断题。根据This attitude toward manual(体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life.(在美国生活的方方面面,尊重体力劳动态度的现象仍然随处可见),可以推断女主人亲自下厨,是因为她以能做这样的体力活而自豪。

In many countries the standard of living enjoyed by their people has been increased rapidly in recent years. Sadly, not everyone in these countries is so fortunate and many people in rich countries are homeless.

The reasons for homelessness are various, but poverty is undoubtedly one of the main causes. The homeless people may have become jobless and then been unable to pay their rent and so no longer have a roof over their heads. Often, the fact that unemployed people get help from the government prevents this from happening, but not always.

Some homeless people are mentally ill and have no one to look after them. Some are young people who, for one reason or another, have left home and have nowhere to live. Many of them have had a serious disagreement with their parents and have left home, choosing to go to a city and live on the streets. Sometimes they have taken such action because they have been unable to get on with a stepparent.

Many homeless people get into the habit of begging to get enough money to stay alive, but many of the general public refuse to give anything to beggars. Often they are moved on by the police, being accused, whether rightly or wrongly, of forceful begging. There are many who disrespect homeless people.

Some cynics(愤世嫉俗的人) declare that homeless people choose to live the life which they lead. But who would willingly choose to live in a shop doorway, under a bridge or in a cardboard box?

范文

I'm_a_Senior_3_student._The_college_entrance_exam_is_on_the_way,_and_everybody_around_us is trying their best to help us in different ways.

At school, all the teachers work very hard, encouraging us to build up our confidence and inspiring us to improve our study. Whenever we meet with difficulties, they are ready to come to our help. Meanwhile, our school also provides good facilities for us students, for example, the library stays open in the evenings. At home, our parents take good care of us and make sure we are well fed so that we can always be full of energy.

I'm very grateful for the efforts of our parents and teachers. With their encouragement and timely help, I'll be able to achieve my goal and be a useful person of our society in the near future.
