It is not unusual at all for teens to answer their parents with oneword answers.Where are you going?”“Places.”“When will you be back?”“Sometime.”“Who will you be with?”“People.

That means that the days of your children bounding in the front door with the

details of their day are over. They are breaking away from you so that they’ll be able to stand on their own as a young adult.

Some parents feel sad about this loss of their children’s closeness.Of course you miss those conversations and friendly talks.Once your children move out after high school and establish themselves confidently as a young adulttheyll come back for easy conversations and even ask for advice. But in order to determine who they are right nowthey need to separate from you.

Your jobhoweveris to keep them safeand that requires knowing where they are and who they are with.Let them know clearly that its not because you want to dominate their life and control themits because its a safety issue for family members to keep track of one another.

When theyre home and sit down to eat a mealsit down with them. You need to open up to them about your life.Tell them of an interesting incident at the officelet them in on a bit of family gossip (闲谈)discuss a piece of news with them. They are glad that you see them as old enough to be in on a few experiences of your life.By letting a teen in on your lifethey just may let you in of theirs.

Mark Twain’s fatherJohn Clemensdecided to leave the small village of Florida and move to the somewhat larger and more prosperous Hannibalon the banks of the Mississippi River.Howeverbecause of Twain’s poor healthhis parents feared he would not survive childhood.

During the family’s first few years in HannibalTwain was too young to understand fully the changes going on around him.John Clemensthough trained as a lawyertried to support his family by running a store and speculating in real estate. When his business failedClemens was forced to put off his plan to establish a permanent home for the family.

About 1843Clemens began concentrating on the practice of lawa decision that brought some stability to the family finances and enabled him to have a house built.Construction began in 1843 and the family moved into the new house the next year.About the time the family moved into their new homeTwain’s health improved dramatically.Instead of having to lead a quiet indoor lifehe could roam the streets of Hannibalclimb the surrounding hillsexplore the area’s caves and splash about in local swimming pools. He reveled (作乐) in his newfound freedomspending nearly all his free time playing outdoors with the other boys in town and soon becoming a leader.

Twain’s carefree days did not last long. His father used their house as collateral (抵押物) for a friend’s loanand the creditor took possession when the loan failed.A physician offered to let them live in his home. The Clemens family moved into that house in late 1846.On March 24,1847John Clemens died.In the same yearhis wife and his oldest sonOrionmanaged to regain possession of the little house on Hill Streetand the family moved back into it that summer.

Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback.Put simplyit means the longer kids are out of schoolthe more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.

Most American schools follow a traditional ninemonth calendar with winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a yearround calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a timewith a few weeks off in between. The National Association for YearRound Education says there were fewer than 3,000 such schools at last count. They were spread among fortysix of the fifty states.

But many experts point out that the number of class days in a yearround school is generally the same as in a traditional school.Brenda McLaughlin is research director at the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University. She says studies of yearround schooling have not found strong learning gains.Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said“Yearround schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”

Across the countryresearch shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students.Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.

But calling them “summer school” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns HopkinsRon Fairchildsaid research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”In American culturethe idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like “summer camp” “extra time” and “handson learning”

BYearround schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.

DThey can’t afford the further study during the vacation.

Who doesn’t love being in loveA true lover listens to you complain about worklets you have that last slice of pizzaand usually remembers to take out the rubbish. And he always thinks you’re beautifuleven in thermal underwear and bunny slippers.Scientists have long been eager to prove that love gives us health benefitstoo.Researchers can’t say for sure that romance (浪漫) beats family affection or warm friendships when it comes to health. But they are focusing on how close relativesand good relationships make us strongerwith health gains that range from faster healing and better control over severe illnesses to living longer.

Longitudinal Mortality Studywhich has been following more than a million subjects since 1979shows that married people live longerhave fewer heart attacks and lower cancer ratesand even get pneumonia less frequently than singles. And a new study from the University of Iowa found that cancer patients with a strong sense of connection to others and satisfying relationships had stronger “natural killer” cell activity at the tumor (肿瘤) than those____________.(These desirable white blood cells kill cancerous cells as part of the body’s immune system.)

23B fade away消退;put out熄灭,扑灭;break into(强行)闯入;keep off sb./sth.远离(不接近)某人()

24C have a gift for (doing) sth.

调查是“look into”,因此A项正确。

keep off 使……

文章开头依据的句子结构比较复杂,that parents expecting the kids to have freedom and be safe have been looking for是定语从句,修饰先行词protection。在从句中,expecting the kids to have freedom and be safe是后置定语,修饰parents

38A with Global Positioning Systems equipped on many mobile phones是介词with的复合结构,Global Positioning Systems (GPS)equip之间是被动关系。

此外,下一空后的location及其后的how to locate the concert都是线索提示。

下一段最后or leave it in their own car and drive with someone else也给出了明确暗示。

此处是such...as...结构,as we all consider useful是定语从句,修饰先行词tracking devices,关系代词as在从句中做consider的宾语。

53B based on表示……为基础based on love and trust是后置定语,修饰relationship

They are breaking away from you so that they’ll be able to stand on their own as a young adult和第三段But in order to determine who they are right nowthey need to separate from you等处可推出作者认为孩子们的这种行为反映出他们的自主和独立意识。

I made a promise that day never to accuse someone of something without proof可知作者明白了在没有证据的情况下不要去怀疑他人。

根据文章第一段中的“Put simplyit means the longer kids are out of schoolthe more they forget”可知,summer learning gap会影响孩子们的学习,使他们遗忘学过的内容。

根据文章第四段首句中的“research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over...”

根据第三段中的“She was cutenice and seemed to hold a lot of the same values as I do.”

72B 第五段中“every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love”可知答案。

73B 根据第五段最后一句“because they remind me of the love we shared(使我想起与人分享过的爱)”可见这是美好的回忆。

74C 第五段中间一句“because the pieces aren’t exactI have some rough edges”可知付出的与得到的不一定等同。

Dear Editor

I’m a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey—“Who do you turn to when in trouble” Here are the results.

Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They’re almost of the same ageso they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students.Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They don’t like to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinionwhen in trouble we’d better ask our teachersparentsfriends or classmates for help.

Yours

Li Hua
