Symptoms of GERD Linked to COPD Exacerbation NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Nov 26 - Results of a study published in the November issue of Thorax suggest that symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are an important factor associated with exacerbations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr. S. Muro of Kyoto University, Japan, and colleagues prospectively examined the association between GERD symptoms and COPD exacerbations in 82 patients with COPD and 40 age-matched controls over a 6-month period. Overall, 22 COPD patients (26.8%) and five controls (12.5%) reported positive GERD symptoms. The incidence of COPD exacerbation was significantly higher in patients with GERD symptoms than in those without symptoms (relative risk 1.93; p < 0.01). Results of multiple regression analysis revealed a significant association between GERD symptoms and the occurrence of exacerbations (RR 6.55; p < 0.01). The authors report that the exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH was inversely associated with the GERD symptom score in patients with COPD and in controls. However, EBC pH was not significantly correlated with COPD exacerbation frequency. "It is difficult to determine whether (GERD) itself directly affects exacerbation or merely coexists in patients who experience frequent exacerbations," Dr. Muro's team comments. "Further examinations are needed to clarify whether treatment for (GERD) symptoms ameliorates COPD exacerbations." |
