NW DELHI: India has asked banks and traders to avoid using Chinese yuan to pay for Russian imports, three government officials involved in policy making and two banking sources said, because of long-running political differences with its neighbour.
One of the government officials directly involved in the matter said New Delhi is "not comfortable" with foreign trade settled in yuan but said settlement in "dirham is okay."
The second official said that India cannot allow settlement in yuan till the relations between the two countries improve. TOI

NEW DELHI: An IndiGo aircraft which took off from Delhi late Sunday night for Doha was diverted to Karachi reportedly due to a medical emergency on board. The passenger who was a Nigerian national passed away.
The flight, 6E-1736, had taken off from Delhi at 10.05 pm Sunday for what was to be a just over four-hour journey to Doha. It landed in Karachi just after midnight (local time). TOI

Korean auto major Hyundai Motor on Monday said it has signed a term sheet for potential acquisition of General Motors' manufacturing facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra.
"The term sheet covers the proposed acquisition of land and buildings and certain machinery and equipment for manufacturing situated at General Motors India Talegaon Plant," Hyundai Motor India said in a statement.
The non-binding agreement, which will be valid for a stipulated period of time, outlines the terms and conditions of the proposed acquisition. Hyundai is likely to sign a final agreement once it receives approval from government authorities and a settlement is reached with the retrenched workers of the Talegaon plant. ET

NEW DELHI: India continues to languish in the strategically-vulnerable as well as embarrassing position of being the world’s largest arms importer, accounting for 11% of the total global imports in 2018-2022, despite the government’s continuing thrust on “Make in India” in defence production.
The latest data on international arms transfers released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on Monday shows Russia remains the largest weapons supplier to India, with 45% of the total imports in the 2018-2022 timeframe, though its share is declining.
France accounts for 29%, displacing the US from the second position by riding on deals like the Rs 59,000 crore one for 36 Rafale fighters. The US, in turn, notched up 11% of the total weapon sales to India. TOI

The parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture has made this recommendation amid instances of how a large number of two-wheelers and slow moving vehicles are entering the expressways and access-controlled highways even as these are prohibited on these high-speed corridors for safety reasons.
