  翘首以盼,从0点等到12点等到24点等到36点,一张花瓣都没有等到啊!不想送我花,那就送我几堆粉红色的国家名片嘛,——凌哥已经购置好点钞机一台。


  梦想总要有的,万一实现了呢?

  果不其然,深圳中英公学的张四海校长给凌哥送来了“七·八”节的礼物。(不说“七夕节”,免得你们乱想了。)啊,梦想终于实现了!


  凌哥花了三四天编织出来的长文《全班齐上阵,40分钟三台戏》,竟然得到张校长的厚爱,早上得到了他的长文留言,已经感受到他的专业指导,谁想到,谁能想到,当天下午张四海校长又以超越顺丰速运的速度给了凌哥一份大礼。然后,昨天在他的公众号(张四海英语工作室)中又转发了凌哥公众号文章的图片。凌哥要和张校长握手,两国领导人会晤时候的那种。


  废话少说,真经奉上——

What We Can Learn from Mr Ling’s Demo Lesson

  It was great to watch Mr Ling’s students’ short play performance. 

1. Students made and brought their own props and realia. 

2. The performance tapped into their different potentials, oral English of course, acting, miming, body languages, gestures, facial expressions, emotions and creativity. One boy even acted as Snow White! 

3. Drama and acting out really involved everyone and accommodated learners of various levels. It also channeled their energy and creativity into something positive. 

4. It was an authentic lesson, we witnessed learners improve and make some oral and written errors. But in the meanwhile they all shone with confidence and radiated joy. 

5. Design moderately challenging tasks and have high expectations and believe they can flow the mark and you may be rewarded with surprises. 

6. We could only imagine there were a lot of interactions going on, Mr Ling probably milled around, gave advice, offered assistance when necessary. (Ling: Exactly, mainly to remind them the time and to make sure that they are using English as much as they can. Also I offered help about some vocabulary, like "antidote". For the weak group, I encouraged them constantly. And finally, when they were on the track, to my surprise, they drove me away, saying "We can". Ha-ha!)

7. A lot of scaffolds and practices were provided before they could show on the stage. 

  Generally speaking, it was a great lesson. Both the teacher and the students enjoyed it and the teacher learned how to teach in the process of helping learners how to learn.

What does a great English lesson look like?

(文字不难,凌哥简注一下)

1. The teachers are well-informed. 

教师熟悉班级的学习情况。

  Teachers know their subject matter and textbooks well. They understand what they set out to teach and how the lesson fits into the previous and later chapters. They know the learners well, their learning styles, classroom habits, strength and weaknesses. They have a toolkit of teaching methods and know when to use which. 

2. The teachers share certain personal traits. 

教师个人特点影响学生。

  They are enthusiastic with teaching, they are empathetic when kids make mistakes, they are encouraging to the kids for the desired outcomes. 

3. Set up routine and build rapport with the learners. 

建立教学常规,与学习者和谐相处。

  They bring routine and order to the class, they trust and build rapport with the learners so both feel safe, comfortable and confident in the class. 

4. Build teaching on what the learners already know. 

基于学生基础实施教学。

  Find out what the learners already know about the subject, what their life experiences relate to the lesson, what excites them, what sparks their thinking etc. 

5. Devise a variety of activities to practice the language. 

采用多变的活动练习语言。

  Engage and activate the learners by planning various activities, some of which practice listening, speaking, reading or writing skills, while others practice communication skills, social interaction skills etc. 

6.Teach English by communication and for communication. 

英语教学,来自交际,用于交际。

  Learners learn to speak English by practicing using English to accomplish a task, and by the end of the lesson the end result is to use English to do something. 

7. Develop learners’ learning strategies. 

帮助学生发展学习策略。

  Different activities are designed to develop their learning strategies, for example, skimming, scanning, categorizing, looking for main ideas or details, memorizing etc. 

8. Advocate learner autonomy. 

持续激发学生的自主性。

  In a great lesson, teachers tend to hand over the learning responsibilities to the learners and make themselves invisible or redundant. Learners take the initiative to study and explore, getting guidance from the teacher when necessary. 

9. Encourage creative expressions of the target language. 

鼓励学生创造性地使用目标语。

  In a great lesson, teachers encourage the learners to experiment with the language and express their thinking with whatever limited language proficiency. Even awkward attempts are encouraged. 

10. Make flexible decisions during the lesson. 

课中灵活决策。

  Know that it’s important to teach the learners not the textbooks or lesson plans. They may change the original plan, add or omit something, or make new minute-to-minute decisions. 

11. Have fun and learn simultaneously. 

学乐同行。

  The teacher and the learners will both be able to have fun, enjoy, share and grow. We don’t pay attention to boring things. Smiles are contagious, when the learning atmosphere is relaxed, learners’ brain work better. 

12.Activate and engage all the learners. 

全员全心全意全身参与。

  A good lesson engages learners mentally, physically and psychologically. Teachers accommodate all learners and each make some progress.
