It wasn’t the usual cartoon character; it still didn’t have the right touch. It was thought that the character could be developed into, well, the real Santa. A 32-year-old Chicago artist Haddon Sundblom was commissioned to bring him to life. Sundblom had already built a reputation in the art world and in the advertising industry. His nickname, Sunny, was earned through his classical style of paintings which built on a warm and friendly palette. Using a neighbor as a model, since the real Santa was busy at the north pole. Haddon Sundblom produced his first Coca Cola Santa in 1931.
It was loved at first sight! Here was what St. Nick really looked like. The red coat, the rosy cheek and the soft, snowy white beard and hair, and here is a very human Santa, who like everyone else in America, enjoys “the pause that refreshes”.

Now through the Haddon Sundblom’s paintings, children from 1 to 100 could see the happy wrinkles on the brow, the constant smile, the twinkle in the eyes that says Santa. And over the next 30 years, Sundblom continued to embellish that image, Sundblom’s St. Nicholas struck casual poses, he relaxed after a hard night’s work, raided the refrigerator a time or two, and sometimes got caught.
