【习语注释】

该习语中的silver spoon表示“银汤匙；银勺子”。该习语本义表示“出生时嘴里喊着银汤匙”，主要用来喻指“born into a wealthy and privileged family”，即“出生在一个富裕而有特权的家庭”，相当于汉语里的“出身富贵；出身豪门；生而富贵；出身名门；出身显贵”。

【习语运用】

她出生于富贵人家，什么事都已为她安排得好好的。

【闲话习语】

中世纪时期的汤匙主要是木制的，spoon一词当时用来表示“chip or splinter of wood”，即“木屑”，这也许就是为什么汤匙用spoon来表示的缘由吧。

尽管该习语的渊源大多被认为是跟英国贵族有关，但其较早的书面使用记录是出现在美语里，比如下面这段话（Deb. U.S. Congress, 1801）：

"It was a common proverb that few lawyers were born with silver spoons in their mouths."

1988年，在美国民主党全国代表大会的主题演讲中，得克萨斯州财政部长安·理查兹修改了这个习语，她故意把习语中的spoon错说为foot，用以调侃出生富裕但总是误用措词的乔治·布什：

“Poor George, he can't help it - he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.”
