Inspired by his mentor Louis Sullivan, an influential figure in the world of modernist architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term 'organic architecture’ around 1908.

Rather than imitating nature or organic elements within the natural world, organic architecture is more concerned with re-interpretation of nature and harmony between the organic and the built environment. It ensures that the individual elements within buildings are put together to reflect the order within nature. Here are 4 of the most striking examples.

Casa Milà

Location: Barcelona, Spain

Year of completion:1910

Architect: Antoni Gaudi

Considered the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudi was devoted to nature and the Catholic religion. While he originally intended this organic building to have a religious purpose, it is now an apartment building. True to the organic style, it features honey shapes that seemingly emerge from the earth.

Learning Hub at Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Location: Singapore

Year of completion:2015

Architect: Thomas Heatherwick

Earning the nicknames 'dim sum basket building’ and 'the Hive’, the Learning Hub consists of 12 eight-storey towers arranged around a public atrium. The organic nature of the building extends to its interior with features like gardens that are intended to encourage social interactions and study among students.

Falling Water

Location: Mill Run, Pennsylvania

Year of completion:1939

Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright

A classic of modernism and organic architecture, Falling Water sits on top of a waterfall. Frank Lloyd Wright designed it for the Kaufmann family who-though they had originally hoped for a view of the waterfall-came to love the home.

East Beach Café

Location: Littlehampton, UK

Year of completion:2007

Architect: Thomas Heatherwick

Located in a seaside area with an industrial history, East Beach Cafe resembles (像) a piece of driftwood. Forty meters long, seven meters wide and five meters high, it initially polarised locals, but has since been well-received by the whole community. It was the first building for Thomas Heatherwick who previously was better known as a sculptor.

21.Which building has the longest history?

A.Casa Milà. B.Learning Hub at NTU.

C.Falling Water. D.East Beach Cafe.

22.What can we learn about East Beach Café?

A.It remains floating on the sea. B.It serves to encourage social interactions.

C.It was not accepted by all the locals initially. D.It was originally intended for a particular family.

23.Which of the following magazines is the text probably taken from?

A.Natural World B.Architectural Digest

C.Organic Gardening D.Extraordinary Figures

After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, year after year, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (空中滑翔) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.

But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land. Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, and three decades after those walking holidays, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider with an instructor. Thompson was 80.

Recently, Thompson heard from an instructor that grown men, when airborne, sometimes cry and beg to be brought down. But what she remembers is “feeling free. You feel weightless. It’s quite windy. It blows you around. You sail along and look around you, and see all the toy houses down below. You feel like you are up in heaven somewhere there, watching everyone down below.”

Thirty years seems a long time to hold on to a dream. “It was,” she says. Why did it take so long? “I wanted to do it, but I felt somebody should benefit from it.” She did not think of just enjoying the experience? “I don’t think so. There had to be a cause at the end of it all,” she says. With her first paraglide, she raised £1,500 for Moorfields eye hospital in London, most of it with the aid of social clubs run by the Presbyterian church she regularly attends.

Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say: 'Isn’t getting old awful?’ I say: 'No. You are free to do more things that you want to do.”

Thompson felt no fear paragliding. “I mean, you sort of say to yourself: Well, if anything happens to me now, I’m OK. People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that didn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.”

24.Why didn’t Thompson take up paragliding after her children left home?

A.She was engaged. B.She preferred walking.

C.She was afraid of heights. D.She had to tend her husband.

25.How did Thompson feel when airborne?

A.She lost his direction. B.She was scared to death.

C.She regretted paragliding. D.She had a sense of freedom.

26.Why could Thompson hold on to her dream for three decades?

A.She got support from social clubs. B.She wanted to make it meaningful.

C.She hoped to contribute to the church. D.She had a good cause to experience fun.

27.What’s Thompson’s attitude towards falling?

A.Terrified. B.Helpless. C.Calm. D.Doubtful.

C

Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of “digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.

The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends. Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can unplug from their digital routine.

Why might you want to take a digital detox? Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things. Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying. Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.

Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing production of melatonin(褪黑素).

Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.

28.Why does the author say “technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing” in paragraph 1?

A.To confirm a concept.

B.To present a problem.

C.To explain a rule.

D.To make a prediction.

29.What does the underlined word “unplug” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Recover. B.Benefit. C.preventing D.Suffer.

30.Which could be the reason for one to start “digital detox”?

A.Apps selection difficulty.

B.Fear of missing important things.

C.Exposure to false news.

D.Pressure from social comparison.

31.What is the purpose of the text?

A.To recommend healthy lifestyles.

B.To call for reducing the use of digital devices.

C.To give instructions on starting digital detox.

D.To present different attitudes to digital products.

As energy costs rise across Europe, some people are taking an opportunity to head off to warmer climates in order to cut down on bills. Greece is one of a number of countries trying to draw visitors in for the winter-with a $20 million advertising campaign.

Famous for its sun, golden beaches and medieval city, the island of Rhodes in the south Aegean Sea is a magnet(磁铁)for northern Europeans. More than three million flock to the island every summer, but some also come in the winter.

In order to capitalize on the energy crisis, the Greek government launched a series of winter tourism campaigns aimed at attracting European visitors seeking an alternative to the bitter cold and high energy bills. Places like Santorini, Crete and Rhodes were high on the list, as temperatures there remain in the high teens.

However, the campaign to advertise Greece abroad hasn’t attracted as many visitors as expected. “The campaign from the ministry is in the right direction-I think they’re doing things right,”says Dionissis Tsiligiris, tourism marketing director for the Rodos Palace hotel and convention center in Rhodes. “But when it comes to winter tourism, Spain will always be the first choice,”Tsiligiris continues. Hotels and tour operators there just have more exposure. So competing for winter tourism is very difficult, as it’s a smaller market.

While it’s true that fewer people travel abroad than in the summer, entering the winter market could seem quite easy when you have the two key ingredients-almost guaranteed sun and well-established tourist facilities. But what’s making it difficult, according to Ashley Quint, senior holiday designer at a UK travel agency, is the message the government is sending. “Tourist boards and local governments can overcomplicate things sometimes and the message doesn’t necessarily come across. In this case, there needs to be a simple and clear message. In addition, broadening it out a little bit may be better, because we see very little here. ”

It seems that making Greece a winter destination for travelers to enjoy and save might need more than just the attraction of warmer weather.

32.Why do some Europeans go to warmer countries for winter?

A.To avoid energy expense.

B.To decrease the heating fee.

C.To enjoy sunshine and beaches.

D.To explore winter travel options.

33.What mainly results in the disappointing result of Greece’s campaign?

A.Ministry’s poor marketing.

B.Operator’s limited exposure.

C.Tourists’ common preference.

D.Government’s inappropriate policies.

34.What should Greece’s campaign focus on according to Ashley Quint?

A.Sending the message globally.

B.Getting ideas easily understood.

C.Beating the potential competitors.

D.Advertising key tourist resources.

35.What might be the best title for the passage?

A.Greece Ready to Take Winter Tourist Market

B.Greece Confident to Win the Tourism Campaign

C.Greece Eager to Draw Winter Tourists to the Sun

D.Greece Determined to Be a Winter Tourist Destination

第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Our lives are full of habits. Unfortunately a great many of them are bad habits. One way to break these bad habits is to fill our lives with good habits. Most people decide one day that they need to make changes to their lives and then they go all out to make big sweeping changes. This may work for them for the first few days, but then they get burned out. 36 This is a very unproductive way to spend your time and energy.

37 Say your goal is to get up an hour earlier every day. One day you start setting your alarm for an hour earlier and you keep this up for one week. Then because you are naturally resistant to change, you go back to your old habit. A better way is to set your alarm one minute earlier every day. After two months you are getting up an hour earlier and you will not even notice the change. 38

This approach can work for just about anything. If you are exercising for half an hour every day and you want to increase that time to one hour then add a minute every day. After one month you will have reached your goal with very little resistance from your body and mind. 39

This method of change is gentle, but very powerful. Think of everything you can accomplish if you just continuously improve a little at a time. The change itself creates the momentum (动力) you need to keep going. 40 What one minute change can you make to your life today?

A.The key is to change a little bit at a time.

B.Keeping on exercising can build up strength.

C.It may take longer, but with this approach you are likely to succeed.

D.Nothing will happen if you are not determined to achieve your goal.

E.Pretty soon they are back to their old habits and nothing has changed.

F.Changing slowly removes the greatest barrier we have to change: fear.

G.Soon you will find yourself reaching your goals with almost no pain involved.

第二节(共10小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分15分)

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Like many other students, you may have various people, 56 (include) family members and friends, giving input on your college decision.

While many of your trusted relatives and peers (同龄人)may have very 57 (value) advice that can help you to make the decision, finally the choice is yours and yours alone. Only you can fully realize which aspects of a college will make you truly happy and 58 (satisfy), so keep that at the front of your mind.

Moreover, fully consider each option. It can be easy 59 (let) a particular school become a front-runner early on 60 your decision-making process, and it may even become the winning choice — but be sure to carefully evaluate every school 61 has accepted you, since you had particular reasons for applying to each school.

Do keep 62 open mind. Students can change majors, but remember that there’s no re-living a certain semester(学期), and there’s no making up for lost time. Don’t go to a school 63 (specific)for a high school relationship 64 to make someone else happy. A 65 (student) college experience is his or her own, and the student must put his or her education first.

第二节 书面表达 (满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My Father’s Son

It’s hard being an astronaut’s son. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he’s so special and so good at everything he does. But I’m just an average eleven-year-old kid.

Nowadays I dream about being a famous writer, but I used to dream about doing something spectacular to impress my father and make him proud of me — something like rescuing a child from a burning building or chasing a robber away from an old lady.

I was daydreaming in school one morning. I was daydreaming about being some kind of hero when my friend Ellen reminded me of my English teacher’s announcement about a Father’s Day essay contest.

“I hope we have a winner right here in my English class,” she said. “There are three prizes for each of you.”

When I got home, I kissed my mom quickly. Then I went upstairs to my room and sat down with a pen and a pad of paper. I started to think about what I would write.

How did I see my father? Hmm.

I saw him teaching me how to use a bat and how to throw a baseball.

I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was hit and killed by a car. And I remembered how he sat and tried to explain death to me when Grandpa Bob died.

These were the things I was going to write about my dad. To me, he wasn’t just a world-famous astronaut. He was my dad.

I wrote about all these memories and put them in my essay. I handed it in the next day and was surprised to find out that the winning essays would be read in the auditorium on Thursday night. All the parents and students were incited.

My parents and I went to school Thursday night. One of our neighbors said, “I bet you’ll win the contest, David. I bet you wrote what it’s like to be the son of an astronaut, and you’re the only one in town who could write about that.”

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I shrugged and then the first prize winner - Ellen was announced.
