New Words and expressions about Culture Shock

Learning aims:

1.通过语境熟悉词块的意义:feel at home, engage in, participate in, be/get involved in, culture shock, adapt to/my adaptation to, dramatic change, suffer from homesickness

2.通过构词法(名词后缀)掌握名词的意义:ambition, participation, applicant, exposure, competence, expectation, motivation;

3.通过制作思维导图梳理culture shock经历的四阶段以及如何应对culture shock

Activity 1. Watch and talk about culture shock.

(Video subtitles)

It was really exciting to see the architecture, the culture and the people.

We were also used to watching English movies when we were back in Nigeria.

I started to miss things that I was used to having around me all the time.

I miss my friends and my family.

One of the biggest differences was just the phrases they used.

The accent was very difficult to understand.

I was really overwhelmed.

I really missed Chinese food.

So that’s when I realized I needed to learn how to cook.

After a while I started to get more comfortable here.

I joined badminton societies and I really met lots of English people there and I felt like my English got improved.

I started talking a lot and feel more confident in myself and my language.

Making so many friends you know both international and people here.

It transformed my life completely.

看视频,感知culture shock

读字幕,描述留学生经历的不同时期。

问题链设计:

Who are they?

What are they talking about?

Whats their feeling at first?

What problems did they encounter?

What did they do then?

Whats their feeling at last?

引导学生思考经历culture shock不同时期的心情,引出下一环节——四阶段。

Activity 2. Define and identify four stages of culture shock.

When people move to a new country, they often feel worried and stressed because they don't know the customs and traditions of the new place. This feeling is what is generally called "culture shock". Kalervo Oberg was the one who first used this phrase. According to Oberg, there are several stages of culture shock.

First there is the  . During this period, whatever people experience is fresh and exciting to them. In the next stage,  , people notice more differences between their own culture and the new one and might feel lonely or depressed for the new culture. What people usually do about these differences is either to change their behaviour or return to their home country. If people stay, they come to the third stage  which occurs when they begin to adjust to the new culture. They begin to become familiar with the customs, the thinking, and the habits of the new place.   is the fourth stage. People finally begin to fit into the new culture. Differences no longer trouble them as much, and they feel that they might actually belong in the new place.

读材料,定义culture shock四阶段,分别是honeymoon stage; frustration stage; adjustment stage; acceptance stage.

学生在经过了视频感知、口头描述之后,再通过文本给出的语境推测出每一阶段的名称,深化了文本理解和词汇意义。

Activity 3. Read and match four stages of culture shock.

  The following weeks there were absolutely overwhelming because everything was so different compared to things back home. The dramatic change made me feel confused and depressed. I also suffered from homesickness, recalling all sorts of things back home —— from my mother's cooking to the neighbor's dog I used to walk. 

  At first it was really exciting to see the architecture, the culture and the people. Everything was fresh and exciting to me. My ambition was to become a more competent applicant when applying for the job in the future. Motivated by my parents’ encouragement, I was determined to study hard abroad to live up to their expectations.

  Now halfway through my exchange year, I feel much more at home in the UK. Exposure to another culture and its people can give me great insights into the world. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to pursue further studies abroad and to gain an understanding of different cultures, too. I believe studying abroad can help you strengthen your abilities in cross-cultural communication and improve your general competence.

  I had to adapt to life in a different country. Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation, I chose to live with a host family, who can help with my adaptation to the new culture. As an outgoing girl, I’ve remained engaged in and always ready to participate in various activities. Actively getting involved in various activities has helped me overcome culture shock.

2、引导学生思考如何判断出属于哪一阶段,从而引发出词块的意义,下划线词块,小组讨论理解词块意义,完成希沃白板中的关于词块意义的搭配。

Activity 4. Fill and observe the formation.

表达语义除了词块,还有词汇,引出对于文本中黑体词汇的思考。

填表格,引发学生思考名词的变化规则:名词后缀。

-ion; -tion; -sion; -ation; -ant; -ure……

引导学生思考给出的词是什么名词?

搭配词义。

Activity 6. Apply the words and think about how to deal with culture shock.

Studying abroad is an enriching experience that expands your horizons(眼界)by providing solid(密切的,全方位的) global     (expose). But before you can make a remarkable journey abroad, many roadblocks need to be overcome, such as culture shock. To help you manage culture shocks, we have created a list of effective tips for the    (adapt) to a new culture.

Research Your Host Country Before You Arrive

It is important to research your host country before you set foot there. This will help you to understand your new country better and learn about your      (expect) from it, thus reducing the impact of culture shock and making you much more       (motivate). You can stay up to date by reading local news websites regularly. You should also visit your university's website and read the international student's column to learn about various tips from students who have been in your shoes(处在某人的境地).

Avoid Living Alone

It can be best that you choose to stay in shared accommodation, such as university halls or shared private accommodation. The company of a friend or your roommate can avoid the  (depress). If you'd like to have the comfort of a family, then you can consider choosing a home-stay, which is an excellent way to engage yourself in the local way of life and experience it closely.

Travel Around Your Host Country

The best way to understand your host country is by travelling around. This offers you the chance to learn about the country's history and geography, communicate with the native, and enjoy the       

(participate) in the culture entirely. So get out to explore and you will become more (competence) while staying there.

Activity 7. Draw a mind-map of how much you learned about culture shock.

【设计意图】

培养学生话题词块关联下意识,强化结构性知识。

在你校就读的国际交换生李华不能很快适应学校生活,写信向你求助,请给他回复邮件,要点如下:

1、表示理解;

2、提出建议:

3、表达期待。

作业环节创设情境,突出本节课主题,考察词块和词汇的运用,同时检测课程目标的实施。
