Reading and interaction I: Life in a day
Hey, all the students in Shanghai, it is my great pleasure to meet you in this special class. From today on, you are gonna continue the journey of you English learning in your high school. For the next eight lessons, I will lead you through the first unit. Today we are gonna talk about the very first class of that, which is about reading "life in a day".
After this class, we are expected to:
1understand the meaning of the text.
2also, you are supposed to analyze some scenes of the film and their meanings.‍‍‍
3Moreover, you should grasp the reasons of making the film "life in a day".‍‍
These are the pages we need today, please turn to Page 6-7.
Are you ready for that? If so, let's get into our class.
Before you dive into the text, I would like you to put your hands into your pocket or schoolbag and then take out one thing.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
It could be anything. Don't hesitate.‍‍
Alright, have you all taken out something? Let me ask you some questions.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
What is it about?
It is about your family? You education? Your free time? Your health? Or is it about your friends?‍‍‍
Is it important to you? Why or why not?‍‍
As for me, I have something in my pocket. It is a photo of my daughter, my wife and I. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Whenever I see it, it always reminds me that there is someone waiting for me back at home. To me, the family is like a network of support. Everyone backs each other with love, care, and mutual understanding.
Now would you please take one minute to share your story about the thing with your deskmate?‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Time is up. Let's take a look at here. Here is a poster of "life in a day". According to the poster, what do you think it is about?‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Is it about a successful person's life in one day? Or is it about a historical event? Or maybe is it a science fiction? Can you read the poster carefully and take one minute to think about the question? I believe you will have a lot of guesses. If you have any ideas, you are more than welcomed to have a discussion with your deskmate. Now one minute, let's go.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
What is life in a day mainly about? Why don't you have a brief look at the film? Here I will show you the trailer of the film. While you are watching it, I will introduce more about the movie to you.
Life in a day is a documentary film made of arranged serious video clips selected from 81, 000 clips submitted to the video sharing website. The clips show respective occurrences from around the world on a single day. People across the world send in videos supposed to be recorded on July 24th, 2010. The director produced the film and edited the videos into one, consisting things from the contributors. The director explains that about 75% of the film's content comes from people on the Internet. Traditional advertising, TV shows and newspapers. The remaining 25% comes from cameras sent out to the devleoping world. Mcdonald points out it is important to represent the whole world. The film focuses on a single day because a day is the very basic building block of human life, no matter where you are, said Mcdonald. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
By now you should have some idea about what life in a day is about. Why don't we dive into the text and explore more about it, ok? Let's go. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
First, I would like you to skim and scan the whole text and do the paragraphing. Match each paragraph in the left column with the sentences on the right. You will have about one and half minutes to go. Now please do it.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Now let's have a check. What about the first paragraph?‍‍‍
Right, it is about the introduction of the film. The second one describes the beginning of the movie. The third one states what most people love. Apart from telling us what most people fear, the fourth paragraph also tells what they have in their pockets. The last one convinces what the film wants us to know. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
After paragraphing, I need you to read the first paragraph and find out the answers to these two questions. What is life in a day made of? Why did Kevin make this film? You have about one minute to do it.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Have you finished? Let's check answers together.
For the first question, the film life in a day is made up of 81, 000 video clips collected from all around the world and they are about ordinary people's life in one specific day, which is July 24th, 2010.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
What is a video clip? A video clip is actually a short video, sometimes it can be a short part of a movie as well.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
As for the reason, why Kevin made this film? He actually used it as a digital time capsule for the future. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Here comes another question. What is a time capsule?‍‍‍
Usually it is a container full of objects, which people think are typical of the time they are living in. Traditionally people bury the container under the ground, so that future generations can dig it up and learn about the life at that time. Here, life in a day is referred to a digital time capsule since one of its purposes is to show future generations what life was like in 2010. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Here, we have a profile of this movie, with seven questions left to be answered. Now I would like you to read paragraph one and two and find out all the related information to fill out this form. You have about two minutes and let's do it. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Time is up. Let's fill in the form together.
Who is the director? Obvious Kevin Macdonald. And he collects the video clips over the Internet. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
How many clips did he get in total? Yes, 81, 000. That's a huge number of videos to be sorted, right?‍‍‍‍‍
And the film is one and a half hours.‍‍‍
The video is all about everyday routines and the connections between them sent by people from 140 countries.
It also raised three questions: What do you love? What do you fear? and what's in your pocket?
Now since we have known the basic information of this film, could you please tell me, based on this chart, what aspect of the movie arouses your interest most? Please complete the sentence on your worksheet. Now I really want to take a look at your answers, if I had the chance. But now I can only list some that I guess you might be interested in. Maybe some of you will say I am interested in what Kevin will pick from so many video clips, or I am really interested in what the connections may be between so many different people in different places all around the world. Or I am really interested in people's answers to these three questions. No matter what questions you have in mind, we are gonna explore more about this amazing film.
before you read the third paragraph, I want you to ask yourself this question: what do you love in your life, just ten seconds to think about it. What is the first that comes into your mind?
Ok, with your answer, please read this paragraph and you will have 30 seconds.
Alright, time is up. What do they love? Have you found the answer in the text? Let's read it altogether.
(朗读ing)
Now rethink about your answers. Do you love the same things as they do? I bet many of your guys would have the similar answers. So it seems that although people live in different countries, we do care about the same things. "care about" here means "have a strong feeling of love for sb/sth". But despite all the connections shown all over the world, still someone would have a totally different idea. Like this man, what does he love? He loves his fridge because it doesn't talk back. It sounds pretty funny. But why would a man love something that can't talk back, take one minute to have a discussion about this with your deskmate.
Ok, let's move on to the next two questions. What do you fear and what's in your pocket? Can you find the answers in paragraph 4? You have 40 seconds to go. Now let's start reading.
Time is up. Why don't we check answers altogether?
For the second one, most people fear about monsters, dogs and death. And what's in people's pocket? Right, a paper towel, a button and even a man having nothing at all. How does the poor man feel about it? Does he feel ashamed? Take a look at this, he said he is not ashamed of his poverty. He is simply happy to be alive.
When you say you feel ashamed of something, it means that you feel embarrassed or guilty because of something terrible. So actually, the man is not ashamed of his poverty. Instead, the poor man feels lucky and happy about the fact that he is alive in this world.
Now let's move on to the last paragraph. I would like you to close your textbook. Yes, close it and just look at your worksheet. Please read this paragraph with me. You should notice there is one sentence missing in the paragraph printed here. So when you read it, just skip to the next sentence, ok? Now, let's read it.
(朗读ing)
After reading this, what do you think the lady might say? When you try to find out the answer, there is one sentence serves as a clue. Do you know which one? Yes, the one that follows is the key, which is "In other words, she wants to show that her life matters". That means she wants to tell others that her life is very important. So what can the missing sentence be? Why don't you write down your idea on your worksheet? And you have 30 seconds to do it? Now please go.
Time is up. Please open your textbook and find out what she really says. What is it? Let's read it altogether. "I just want people to know that I'm here." And I think that speaks the voice of many people's hearts. Being eager for the sense of existence in this fast-paced world.
Now let's focus on the last sentence of the paragraph. "Each of them is able to find meaning and happiness, no matter what his or her life is like." Do you agree with that? I agree. I believe you also have such people around you or maybe you are exactly the one like this! Please think about 1-2 examples about your friends or yourself and then share the story in class. You'll have three minutes.
You must have shared good stories and I also want to tell you that happiness doesn't happen out of anywhere. It has to be worked on. It has to be produced, created, discovered, built from the ground up. And it has to be the decision in your mind. The decision to be happy. Happiness can never be seen. It can only be felt by those who get it. Sometimes our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Sometimes it lies in your gratitude or readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness. There are many strategies to create happiness or at least to strive for it. Though happiness is something that doesn't just come naturally, it is something that any person can build on their own. Just remember, happiness can happen to anyone because everyone deserves to be happy.
Moreover, there is one thing you might have noticed. Can you complete the sentence, in life in a day, the film ends... What time? Right, the film ends just before midnight. So why do you think the director used this as the ending of the film?
Can you take two minutes to share your thoughts in groups of four?
I hope you had a heated discussion about it, so now let's see how Kevin Macdonald explains this. He says "It's not just midnight to midnight, but it's also from light to dark and from birth to death".
Now I think you must have a better understanding of the text.
For your assignments today, first, listen to the audio recording of the text and read the text at least twice. Second, please finish comprehension work 1 & 2 on P.8.
For the class interaction time, please have discussions in groups about the following questions. What kind of people does the film focus on? What quality do these people show in the video clip? And why does the director choose this as a time capsule for the future?
OK, so much for my teaching today, for the next class, we are going to talk about the deep understanding of this lesson. Thank you very much for your time with me, see you next time.
