Human speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from the common “m” and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages. But why are certain sounds more common than others? A ground-breaking, five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to new speech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.
More than 30 years ago, the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speech sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”, were more common in the languages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led by Damián Blasi at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has found how and why this trend arose.
They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned (对齐), making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure (结构), making it easier to produce such sounds.
The team showed that this change in bite was connected with the development of agriculture in the Neolithic period. Food became easier to chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and so didn’t grow to be so large.
Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a global change in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the use of “f” and “v” increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years. These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gatherer people today.
This research overturns the popular view that all human speech sounds were present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago. ”The set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since the appearance of human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech sounds that we find today is the product of a complex interplay of things like biological change and cultural evolution,“ said Steven Moran, a member of the research team.

1. 节目介绍;
1. 写作词数应为80左右;

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.

Lucy  Bob

RAZ AAU
Newsela(网站资源)
Sixth Tone
Click  Spider  Faces  Muse

How to cut back on junk food in your child's diet – and when not to worry
Though the research is more limited in kids, some studies have found a link to health concerns such as weight gain and higher cholesterol levels. Zhang says there's enough evidence that it makes sense to reduce the amount of these foods that kids eat, especially because dietary habits adopted in childhood often carry over into adulthood.
Researchers have found that stressed people have higher cholesterol levels, among other things.

比如  con/ver/sa/tion
ex/cel/lent
mar/vel/lous

5-minute writer

Last night, as I was making my way home, I chanced on an elderly woman dressed in tattered clothes scavenging through the rubbish bins for any leftovers or items of value that lay by the roadside. Beside her was a cart where she sorted and stored her findings. I wondered if she was a regular garbage collector, determined to find anything that she could salvage and sell just to get by. She seemed completely engrossed in her specialized task, oblivious to the glances of the passers-by who paused to watch her. The sight of a leftover pizza slice brought pure joy to her face, as if it were a rare delicacy to be cherished. Questions filled my mind: Where was her family? Did she have to resort to this method of scrounging for food every single day? Such thoughts continued to weigh heavily on my mind. While many people today enjoy a relatively comfortable life, there are still those who struggle to make a livelihood by sifting through the contents of trash cans.

Recently, we visited a nearby shopping mall named Mei Cheng, which is only a 10-minute walk from our house, to let Jasmine play on various slide combinations. She was totally engrossed in crawling through the tunnels and sliding down the slides. One of the slides was located in the basement level-one, which was previously bustling with various snack stands that attracted food lovers. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the basement has been nearly empty for three years except for a few struggling drink stands. However, the joyful laughter of children on the slides brought some much-needed energy to the otherwise sleepy basement, highlighting how desolate it has become.
Changshu has recently witnessed the emergence of numerous new shopping centers, like newborn babies being born. Consequently, the competition among them has become progressively fierce, causing some to become hot shopping paradises while others become deserted and empty buildings. The harsh reality is that a small city like Changshu cannot sustain so many shopping centers.

My barber is a seasoned professional, in his early sixties. He’s a diligent and sociable man, with an infectious sense of humor. He works nearly every day, only taking time off to travel with his family or to attend a special event. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued to provide his regular clients with haircuts at his home, located just a quick 5-minute walk from his studio.
With his quick-witted jokes and lively personality, my barber always manages to bring a smile to his clients’ faces. He often chats with his friends in their local dialect of Changshu, so quickly that I find it hard to keep up. Despite this, their laughter and camaraderie fill the salon, making it a warm and welcoming environment for everyone.
Thanks to his outgoing nature and exceptional communication skills, my barber has built an extensive network of friends and clients. He’s frequently invited to attend various social events and gatherings and always makes a great impression with his hospitality and charm. His clients enjoy catching up with him and sharing their latest news, knowing that he’s always interested in hearing what they have to say.
In conclusion, my barber’s story shows that through hard work, social skills, and a great sense of humor, a seasoned expert in his craft can go beyond just being a service provider. He can be a friend, a confidante and an integral part of his clients’ lives.

https://virtualwritingtutor.com/

Reading Explorer+Great Writing)

1 I left the theatre feeling annoyed and frustrated, but what happened next turned my annoyance into terror. As I walked home, I felt like someone was following me. I looked over my shoulder, but no one was there. I shrugged it off as my imagination and continued on my way.

When I got to my apartment building, I took the elevator to my floor. But as I stepped out, I heard footsteps behind me. Again, I looked back, but there was no one there. I quickened my pace and fumbled for my keys.

As I unlocked my door, I felt something brush against my shoulder. I turned around to find the young man from the theatre standing behind me. He had a sinister grin on his face and was holding a knife in his hand.

I was frozen with fear as he stepped towards me. 'You should have minded your own business,' he sneered. 'Now you'll pay for it.'

I screamed as he lunged at me with the knife. By some miracle, I managed to dodge his attack and slam the door shut. I locked it and ran to call the police.

When the police arrived, they searched the building but couldn't find the man. It was like he had vanished into thin air. I still have nightmares about that night and am always looking over my shoulder, afraid he'll come back.
