Buddha's Answer to True or False
Buddha's Answer to True or False

Origin: Buddhist sutra, Agama miscellaneous(962)

Long long ago, in India, there was a great philosopher who was later respected as the founder of Buddhism. He was known as the 'enlightened one' or Buddha. One day, an aristocrat, who was seeking release from the cycle of death and rebirth, came to him and asked: ” Why is it that you said everything in the world was true, not false?"
Buddha replied," I don't agree with what you've just said. I have never said such a thing."
The aristocrat continued " Everything in the world is impermanent. Things that exist can't last forever. Nothing is for certain and there is no eternity. With, without, with-nothing, without with-nothing. Body is soul. Without soul it means there is no body. So, after you die, are you dead or are you not dead? Are you dead including the part that is not dead? Or are you dead with both parts that can die and can't die ?"
Buddha answered " It has never occurred to me to think the way you thought or what you've just said. I haven't given thought to an afterlife. "
The gentleman pursued," Was there something wrong with what I said ? If not, why did you brush off my questions?”
Buddha said, “ Because these questions are of no interest to me although they may appear to you. It seems you've looked at things the wrong way round.”
“ How so?"
" You should focus on the sufferings of life, their causes, ways to get rid of them, and what to do to achieve their eradication. Where did your thoughts come from? Why is it so? Who were you in the role of thinking? How was everything composed? The becoming of things itself is really neither right nor wrong."
