Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence(独立) can be more useful than crying for help. That’s what the story I’ve heard recently tells me.
The young man was born in 1982 in a    1    family in a small town. When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned(被遗弃的) baby girl. A year later, his    2    left home with his younger brother because she couldn’t    3    hard life and pressure from her mad husband. The 12-year-old boy began to    4    his whole family. After the young man’s story went public, people were deeply impressed by his behavior.   7    his life was hard, he didn’t abandon(放弃)his father and his sister because    8    needed his help very much. And he    9    donations from others. He said he felt    10   because of kind offers, but he could depend on his own work. With his hard-won money, he    11   aided other students in trouble.
Today when many young people worry more about their own happiness, this young man’s behavior reminds us of what we don’t usually    12  : love and care for others. Nobody could continue to live    13   these.
Through his hard life, the young man is regarded as a    14   in people’s eyes. So when facing difficulties, don’t    15   bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society, and you’ll find the world smiling back.

Ⅳ. 阅读理解(一)  (每小题2分,共30分)
阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C三个选项中,选出一个最佳选项。
(A)
The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China but is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some orange juice if you have it. ”That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous saying:“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

A .the Romans are people of good manners
B. Americans always do the same things as the Romans do
C. you should get used to the local customs wherever you go
(B)
The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problem. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal(煤)in houses and factories in the city, and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It’ caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.

A. Because of the rise in pollution

A. rubbish                  B. noise pollution    C. air pollution
(    )4. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because        .
A. it’s bad for all living things in the world
B. it makes us angry more easily
C. it makes much noise
(    )5. Which of the following is Not true?
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does.
C. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.
(C)
What’s favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange and red? If you do, you must be a person full of hopeful happy feeling about life. Do you like gray and blue? Then maybe you are quiet, and you would rather go after than go before. And sometimes you feel unhappy.
If you love green, you are strong–minded. You wish to do everything well and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychosomatic tell us.
They tell us that we don’t choose our favorite colors as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel happier and more comfortable than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and gladness to the saddest winter day.
Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black dark gray.
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things.
Remember also that you will know your friends better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’t forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose something in different colors.

Ⅶ. 阅读理解 (二) (每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面短文,简要回答所有问题。
Now and then we all get ill. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what makes us ill. They may give us something to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctors’ medicine doesn’t work. A sick person doesn’t get well. The pain will not go away. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he was not getting well. Then he found a new doctor inside himself. This doctor was his own sense of “humor(幽默感)”. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain. Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to feel well again. He said “laughing” was his best medicine. His doctor thought so, too.
Another man was ill, and he had a terrible pain in his back. The doctors couldn’t stop it from hurting. So the man began to “picture” the pain. In his head “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it as a real dog. And he made friends with the dog. And his pain went away.
These stories may surprise you. But more and more people are getting well in this way. So visit the “doctor” inside your own head and you can stay happy and well.
1.       Does the medicine always work?
2.       Who is the first sick man’ doctor?
3.       Who made the second sick man well again, the doctor or the dog in his head?
4.       Why did the writer ask us to visit the doctor inside our heads?
5.       What can you learn from the story?

The bicycle is one of the simplest yet most useful inventions in the world. What is the most surprising is that it was not    1    earlier, although the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci had
2    picture for bicycles and flying machines and some other things. Those things were not produced    3    long after he died.
A person riding a bicycle uses very little    4    to make the bicycle move, and there is no pollution at all when you are riding. Even so, in most developed    5   , most people don’t go to work by bicycle. It is not    6     the bicycles are expensive or people feel    7    if they ride to work. It’s because the number of cars on the rods becomes larger. It certainly becomes more    8    to ride a bicycle. As a result, more people put their bicycles away and go to work
9    their cars. And in this way, the situation is made more serious. Perhaps the best way to make riding safer and more popular is to    10   paths only for bicycles.
