Of course, if I wake up feeling unfomfortable, I would do exercises; However, when I wake up feeling    1     ―― no ackes,no stiff muscles—I suddenly find good reasons to   2    my regular exercises. I am too busy today; I just need some quiet time; There is something else I would rather do. It seems    3     that my stiff and aching muscles are probably good for me, but indeed they    4     me to pay more attention to my health. It’s not about just making the best of my aches and    5    . They are actually beneficial to me.
Abraham Lincoln knew the    6    that difficulties can bring value to a life. One of his ministers , Edwin Stanton,   7    found faults with the president and criticized him, sometines in public. But Lincoln seemed to show lots of    8     with him. The president was asked why he kept such a    9    position. Lincoln told of a story. He was chatting with an old farmer and he noticed a big    10     bite the farmer’s horse. Lincoln went over to    11     the fly away. Even life’s difficulties and problems have their place. That fly kept the horse moving. Edwin Stanton, not Yes Man, kept the prsident   13     and self-reflective. My stiff muscles and aches keep me    14     regularly.
Sometimes we make the best of our problems, and how    15     it is when those problems can make the best of us.

When he entered, Jim Potter waved him to come closer, and said, “I really can’t express the great sympathy that I have for you. All that I can say is   19  I am terribly sorry, and    20     you need me to do anything, you can rely   21    me.”
Many years later Edgar Guest said, “Jim Potter may have already forgotten that moment when he extended his hand to me in sympathy, but I shall never forget   22     in all my life. Mr.Jones went into Willingdon on Midsummer’s Eve and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back t9ill midday on Sunday. The men had milked thecows in the early morning and then had gone out hunting, without feeding the animals. When Mr. Jones got back, he immediately wemt to sleep on the drawing-room sofa with the News of the World over his face, so that when evening came, the animals were still unfed. At last they could stand it no longer. One of the cows broke in the door of the store –room and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains.
It was just then that Mr. Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the store-house with whips(鞭子)in their hands, beating the animals. There is so much more meaning to a message than what exists in the spoken or written words. Language skills are just not enough to achieve effective communication in another culture. For example, if a person says, “you know, Barbara, I really like you,” it has different meanings depending on whether it is said by a man or a woman, in an office or a bar.
Every culture has its own set of cultural cues(暗示) that each member of that culture understands. It’s easy to see how a peron from culture A and a person from culture B interpret the very same words in totally different ways. Here are two examples:
Marsha thought things were going well with her new French friends, particularly Bertrand. He continually invited her to interesting and fun events, but he was constantly making fun of her. One day at an art exhibit, while looking at a particularly abstract piece, Marsha says that she cannot understand what the artist was trying to express. Bertrand smiles and responds, “Yest, I’m afraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.” Marsha was sad; she really liked him and could not figure out what she was doing to cause him constant teasing, so she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,” the host mother told her, “this means that he really likes you. In France, when someone feels comfortable enough to laugh at you, that means that you have been welcomed as an intimate friend.
Sara, a young businesswoman from New York, was in Japan to clse a big deal fro her company. In their talk, she became more and more certain fo sale because her Japanese business partners contnually nodded their heads as she spoke. When she finished, she thought the deal was made and asked when they would like to sigh the agreement. She was shocked when she was told that ehy were not yet sure if they wanted to make the deal or not. What Sarah did not knowis that in Japan, nodding head does not necessarily mean “yes” as it does in the US. It can also mean “yes, I am listening and understandi9ng what you are saying.”

One of the chief causes of fatigue(疲倦) is boredom. To prove this point, let’s take the cse of Alice, a stenogrpher(速记员) who lives on your street. Alice came home one night completely exhausted. She acted fatigued. She was fatigued. She had a headache. She had a backache. She was so exhausted that she wanted to go to bed without waiting or dinner. Persraded by her mother, she sat down at the table. The telephone rang. The boyfriend! An invitation to a dance! Her eyes bacame bright and lively. She felt very happy and hopeful. She rushed upstairs, put on her Alice-blue dress, dashed out and danced until three o’clock in the morning: And when she finally did get home, she ws not the slightest bit exhausted. She was, in fact, so excited that she couldn’t fall asleep.
Was Alic really and honestly tired eight hours earlier, when she looked and acted exhauseted? Sure she was. She was exhausted because she was bored with her work, perhaps bored with life. There are millions of Alices .You may be one of them.
It is a well-known fact that your emotional attitude usually has far more to do with producing fatigue than physical work. Afew years ago, Hoesph E. Barmack, ph. D., published in the Archives of Psychology a report of some of his experiments, showing how boredom produces fatigue. Dr. Barmack put a group of students through a series of tests in which, he knew, they could have little interest. The result? The students felt tired and sleepy, complained of headaches and discomfort in eyes, and became easily annoyed. In some sense, even their stomaches were upset. Was it all “imagination”? No. Metabolism(新陈代谢) tests were taken of these students. These tests shwoed that the blood pressure of the body and the consumption of oxygen actually fall down when people are bored, but both of them rise immediatedly as soon as they begin to feel inteest and pleasure in their work!

A. she lost her appetite for dinner
B. she was tired of her work or her life
C. she danced too long time with friends
D. she had a bad headache and a backache
39. When a peron begins to enjoy his work, ______.
A. his blood pressure goes down   B. his metabolism improves rapidly
C. his oxygen consumption drops   D. his stomach sometimes gets upset
40. Dr. Barmack explained the result of the tests on the basis of _____.
A.medical examinations    B. personal observation
C. accepted theory        D. common knowledge

No one in my family could believe Allegra had any disability, much less one as severe as hers. To them a disability was physical, something you could see. They knew her as a happy, normal child. That’s how it is with a learning disability-you don’t see physical symptoms.
But as she grew out of her preschool years, it became apparent to me that Allegra wasn’t like other children. She wasn’t able to follow directions to the simplest games. For that reason, she had very few friends. The most basic information puzzled her. For example, she had no idea that $50 was more than five cents. Sometimes,by the pool, she would pretend to read----I knew she was pretending because the book was upside down. She preferred withdrawing into her own world where she soulc imagine being a ballet dancer, a Broadway actress or a fiure skater. In the real world, ballet classes and music lessons led only to confusion, frustration and disappointment.
As for school, there was no way she could be included in a mainstream classroom. I went through every special school in New York, only to be told over and over: “ She doesn’t belong here.”
“Don’t worry,” my father told me, “we’ll find the best doctor possible. No matter what it costs, we’ll find a cure for Allegra.”
The last straw came a few monthsafter the diagnosis(诊断), when I was at a pay phone on 72nd Street, waiting for an answer from the very last schol on my list. Finally  a cold voice came on- I can still hear it –and said:“I’m sorry, but we feel this isn’t the palce fro her.” I hung up and staed at the phone in tears.
I had lived my life as the daughter of Henry Ford II, and for the first time in my life I faced a problem that neither money nor position could solve. I nearly gave up, but I knew I couldn’t. Without me, my daughter stood no chance of making it.

A. lay in psychology   B didn’t exist at all
C. was obviously physical   D. could not be seen
42. Allegra was disabled in that_________.
A. she was unable to learn like a normal child
B. she was always reading with her book upside down
C.she kept herself off other children in her class
D. she wasliving in her dreams out of the real world
43. In which way wasn’t Allegra like other children?
A.She enjoyed living in her own world
B. She liked dancing very much.
C.She was fond of figure skating.
D. She dreamed of being an actress.
44. What was “the last straw” to the author?
A. The doctor’s dagnosis on Allegra.
B. Her father’s promise about Allegra.
C. The refusal from the very last school.
D. Her family’s attitude towards Allegra.
45. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author______.
A. would ask Henry Ford II for help
B. would continue to help her daughter
C. would leave New York for the good of her daughter
D. had to use money or positon to deal with the problem

读写任务
The writer,a mom, shows us the changes in the relationship between her and her daughter, from planning everything for her daughter to respect her decisions. And she also felt happy when her daughter cared about her mood.
As a matter of fact, I’m always dreaming of such a relationship as respecting each other between parents and their  sons or daughters. But things didn’t go as I expected. I clearly remember one summer vacation when I planned to read some books I was interested in after I finished my homework. To my surprise, my mother had bought some books for me which, she thought, was very useful to me. I was very angry and threw those books away, saying that I wouldn’t read any of them. This made my mother angry, too. She took away the books I was willing to read. As a result, I didn’t read any books throughout the whole vacation.
From the experience above, I realize that we could hope that our parents respect us when we have different ideas, but understanding each other is important as well. Not only can we expect our parents understand and respect us but also we should understand and respect them.
