Raised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfistedtowards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew intoadulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever Icame home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dadnever met me, even in sever weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in hisloudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”
The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alonealong the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valuedthat my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But thatfeeling was canceled one spring evening.
It had been a particularly difficult week at college after longhours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stop, Istepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journeyhome.
A row of hedge(树篱)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to ourhouse. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap ofmy journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge becauseit meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, thehedge had just come into view when I saw something gray movingalong the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closerobservation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then Iknew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hardagainst the tears. He did care, after all.
On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I couldhardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secretmovement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find myfather sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!”he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.
     I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’mhome.”

The British “Daily Telegraph”
Traditionally regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, the Boeing 777’s reputation will have been damaged by the secondfatal crash in less than a year. There are around 1,000 Boeing 777sin service, and the plane is a long distance machine, travellingsome of the longest routes. It entered service in 1995 and theNational Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible formonitoring US-made aircraft ,has recorded fewer than 60incidents.
But the recent record hasn’t been exact with two major incidents-acrash at San Francisco airport last July, which causes three lives, and the crash-landing of a British Airways 777 at Heathrow inJanuary 2008.
To our sadness, two days ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lostcontact flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Malaysian disasteris very different from both the BA incident and the crash involvingan Asian Airlines flights at San Francisco International Airport inJuly, which occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysiaairlines plane disappeared off the radar(雷达)during the early stagesof the trip.
The accident at San Francisco in July was due topilot error which led to the engines being set to idle because hebelieved the computer would maintain sufficient speed to keep theplane up in the air. The BA crash landing, which did not result inany deaths, was finally found to have been caused by a block in thefuel line feeding the engine.
However, the Malaysia airlines plane disappearedoff the radar during the early stages of the trip. No exactexplanations have been given for the Malaysia airlines plane crash.First reports suggest that Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the 53-year-oldMalaysian airlines pilot, was hugely experienced-having joined thecarrier in 1981 and with 18,365 hours in the aircraft under hisbelt.
25. Which of the following is TRUE of the plane crashes?
   A. There are four planecrashes mentioned in the passage
   B. The BA incident in Julyresulted from the pilot error
   C. Three deaths were caused inthe crash at San Francisco
   D. The crash in San Franciscoairport was caused by a block
26. What can we learn from the next?
   A. The exact reason for 370crash is not clear
   B. Flight 370 crash must besimilar to the BA incident
   C. The experienced pilot ofFlight 370 can’t have operated wrong
   D. Flight 370 must have beentaken control of to a different place
27. What you read is ______________.
   A. anote           B. aschedule      C. areview        D. a news report
28. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.
   A. introduce the Flight 370crash
   B. show Boeing 777’ssafety
   C. guess the cause of theFlight 370 crash

Many of the world’s countries have reached or are approaching zeropopulation growth (ZPG). Nearly all such lands are economicallywell developed. They include much of Europe(including Russia), theUnited States, Canada, Japan. and Australia. As the rate of naturalincrease(RNI)declines, two things happen.First, the populationbegins to decline if the loss is not balanced by immigration.Second, a country’s population ages because there are fewerbirths.
Is achievingZPG good or bad? What happens when a country’s population begins todrop? Many people, after all, believe that population decline is agood thing. But is it good for everyone? Does everyone agree?
An agingpopulation can create many problems. Senior citizens require morehealth care and medical attention. Rather than paying intoretirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions. In theUS, the Social Security program, according to many experts, will beused up by 2018. It will pay out more money than it takes in.Additionally, a great number of jobs go begging in search of peoplewilling or entry level positions that pay low wages. With an ableto do them. Many of these jobs are aging population, who will fillthem? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number oftraining and highly specialized skills. Who will fill thesepositions as retirees leave the workforce?
The answer to the problem of declining and aging population issimple: increased migration.
Today many people, particularly those from less developedcountries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willingto take jobs that cannot(or will not) be filledby the domestic population. Others are welleducated and highly skilled. Both groups contribute to a country’seconomy progress in many ways. Further, they add to the richness ofa country’s culture. Of greatest importance, perhaps, is the factthat they have become absolutely necessary to the economy of manylands. As you can see, for many countries and for most immigrants, migration is a win—win situation.
29. In the writer’s view, which of the following statements isTRUE?
   A. Not everyone agrees thatachieving ZPG is absolutely good
   B. Achieving ZPG is everycountry’s aim in spite of its side effects
   C. Achieving ZPG is bad forsenior citizens
   D. Achieving ZPG is good foremployment
30.According to the passage, the best way to solve the problem ofdeclining and aging populationis             .
   A. to improve the health caresystem   B. to increase RNI
   C. to increaseemployment             D. to increase migration
31.The main idea of the last paragraphis       .
   A. the advantages of increasedmigration
   B. the problem of decliningand aging population
   C. how to increasemigration
   D. some ways to enrich acountry’s culture
D
Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people wouldlaugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, Idiscovered there are lots of other psychological factors that makepeople laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someonelaughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason thatmakes him laugh—and the more reasons there are, the more powerfulthe joke will be.
I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the manstarted to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyonelaughed their hearts out. The main reason those people stronglylaughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrianswho crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it alsomade the audience feel that they were right about being angry atthose pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because ofthe funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a resultof the psychological support they got.
The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includesother psychological factors, the more the person will like it. Forexample, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a jokethat is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’tjealous of him.
In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we alsolaugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results fromthe other psychological factors involved in the joke. I stronglydiscourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to makesomeone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your jokesupports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it alot.
32. What did the author find out after studying psychology?
A. Only good jokes make people laugh
B. Many factors lead to people laughing.
C. Funny things can make people laugh
D. Laughter can make people healthy.
33. Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?
A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.
    B. The pedestrians behaved ina funny way.
C. They could feel the pedestrians’ happiness.
D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.
34. What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?
     A. Annoy    B. Blame    C. Look down on   D. Make up to
35. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
