Application to the Ph.D. programme

Applicants to this Ph.D. programme are expected to have completed a full Master of Science Programme in natural sciences or engineering in a related field such as biology, chemistry, physics, computer science or medicine when the Ph.D. is started.

The students to this programme will be admitted from M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) programme of NTU-SCE (Track 1) and from regular Ph.D. applicants from any other University (Track 2). For Track 2 applicants, the full dossier of the application should be directed to NTU-SCE by the respective deadlines (January 30th and June 30th in every year).

Once the applicants are short-listed jointly by SCE and BII, they will be directed to apply on-line via Graduate Studies Office (GSO) of NTU admission website and send in their hardcopies of their application forms. 

 

Track 1
(1 yr M.Sc. + 4 yr Ph.D.)
Graduate with Bachelor’s degree through M.Sc. in Bioinformatics

Track 2
(4 yr Ph.D.)
Graduate with preferably Master’s degree

 

 


Exemptions from courses

Exemption from the coursework courses may be granted by the Associate Chair (Research) if the candidate is deemed to have already done sufficient coursework in the relevant area in a Master's degree programme at a recognised University. Minimum number of courses required (including exemption, credits transferred and "Pass" / "Fail" courses ) is 6 courses.

International applicants who have completed M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) degree at NTU may be exempted from English and GRE requirements.

 

PhD Programme in Cognitive Systems and Visual Computing

Research Topics
Candidates will pursue a chosen research topic of interests under the broad areas of cognitive systems and visual computing. The potential research topics of interests may include but are not limited to the following

  • Brain Mapping and Integrated Computational Model

  • Neural Dynamics of Drives and Self-Awareness in Robots

  • Enhanced Visual Memory for Assisted Living

  • Modelling of Group Behavior and Social Cognition

  • Attention-driven Visual Target Search

  • Computational Visual Computing

  • Perceptual based Visual Signal Processing

  • Visual Search, Understanding and Recognition

  • Social Robot Cognition

Programme Structure
Each PhD student will be co-supervised by an SCE faculty member and an 
I2research scientist. Existing NTU processes for PhD student supervision, assessment and graduation will be used. The PhD research topic will be jointly identified and agreed upon by the SCE and I2R supervisors, with the supervisor from SCE carrying the responsibility for academic affairs. 

The PhD candidate should fulfill all the coursework, research and other requirements as stipulated by NTU-SCE for the award of the PhD degree that will be awarded by NTU. 

Specifically, the candidate is expected to fulfill the following requirement.

  1. Complete 6 graduate level courses (with at least one SCE CE7XXX series course);
  2. To pass a confirmation examination by the end of 18 months;
  3. To pursue an independent in-depth study of approved research topic, leading to a thesis (dissertation);
  4. To pass an oral examination on the subject matter of his/her thesis (thesis defense).

Admission Criteria
Application for admission for academic year 2013/2014 is now open.

To apply for the PhD programme, you will need

  • A good Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • A good GRE score taken within the past five years
  • A good TOEFL score taken within last 2 years (mandatory for candidates from non-English speaking countries)
  • Outstanding intellectual ability and motivation
  • Relevant research experience and publication records (preferred)

Besides academic performance, the admission committee will also consider your statement of objectives, research interest and letters of reference.
