The most appealing aspect of Manguin's painting lies in hisluxuriant sense of colour. Reviewing an exhibition held at GalerieDruet in 1910, Guillaume Apollinaire, the great poet and aficionadoof avant-garde painting, declared, 'M. Manguin is a voluptuouspainter. Colourist that he is, Manguin confines himself to theex-pression of contrasts that produce flashes of half-livid,half-flesh-colored light. His wonderstruck landscapes tell of theyoung glory of natural sites in June, after sunrise' (in L.C.Breunig, ed., Apollinaire on Art, New York, 1972, p. 100).

Glowing with light and warmth, Manguin’s le Golf deSaint-Tropez is a colourist extravaganza, a sumptuous visual hymnto life and beauty. He has created an enticingly paradoxical image,a fashionable scene of bucolic repose from the late 1910s. In it,we see Jeanne Manguin the artist’s wife, laid down secluded andundisturbed, reading a book from a dramatic viewpoint, saturatedwith the heat and light of the South of France. The deep, rich,blue of the Mediterranean draws the viewer in with its lushness andlapis-like intensity.

Throughout their marriage, Manguin frequently painted Jeanne;she appears in his works in every imaginable setting, from interiorscenes, standing nude at the mirror, to exterior scenes bathingblissfully under the shade of trees. Manguin clearly adored hiswife, and, perhaps more than any other artist, continued to portraytheir intimacy throughout his career.

Manguin had already honed his skills as a colourist indifferent places in France, even before his fascination with theSouth flowered. Recent scholarship has made much of the contrastthat Manguin explored in his paintings between the North and theSouth, and between realism and idealism. His ever-increasinginterest in the South and its seeming timelessness and endurabilityhad even taken a mythological turn in some pictures, recallingMatisse's early masterpiece Le bonheur de vivre in the BarnesFoundation. In Le Golf de Saint-Tropez, we are thus presented withan almost Arcadian theme. In Le Golf de Saint-Tropez Manguin haspresented a modern vision of paradise.

The present painting was bought directly from Galerie Druet inParis in the 1930s and has remained, unseen from the public, in thesame Parisian collection ever since.

亨利·查尔斯·曼金（Henri Charles Manguin，1874-1949，又译为亨利·夏尔·芒更），法国野兽派画家。曼金曾进入巴黎高等美术学院（ÉcoledesBeaux-Arts），在居斯塔夫·莫罗（Gustave Moreau）指导下学习，亨利·马蒂斯（HenriMatisse）和查尔斯卡莫因（CharlesCamoin）与他成为亲密的朋友。像他们一样，曼金曾在卢浮宫制作了文艺复兴时期的艺术品副本。
