This painting was identified as the work of Hans Memling whengiven to the Museum, and while that attribution can no longer besustained, there is no consensus among special¬ists regarding whichpainter might actually be responsible for the portrait. The man’sclothing points to a date in the 1480s, and his hairstyle is onegenerally seen in Italian rather than Netherlandish portraits,suggesting that the sitter may have been one of the many Italianmerchants living in Bruges, a principal trading center in15th-century Europe.
