9.aircraft, deer, fish, means, series, sheep, works, species等作主语时，根据意义决定单复数。

例如：The sheep is big.

The sheep are eating the grass.

 

10.population作主语时，若作为一个整体，谓语动词用单数；当涉及到人口组成时，用复数形式。

例如：The population of China is larger than that of Japan.

One third of the population here are workers.

 

11.a(large)quantity of 修饰可数名词或不可数名词，其短语作主语时，谓语动词依照of后面名词的单复数而定。

例如：A large quantity of people is needed here.

A large quantity of blouses were on sale.

 

注意：quantities一般用复数形式。

如，Quantities of food(nuts) were on the table.

短语如in quantities, in large quantities意为‘大量’；in small quantities意为‘少量’。

 

12.a great deal of, a large amount of 修饰不可数名词，其短语作主语时，谓语动词通常用单数；large amounts of 修饰不可数名词，其短语作主语时，谓语动词通常用复数。

例如：A great deal of(A large amount of) damage was done in a very short time.

Large amounts of money were spent on the bridge.

1.Large quantities of water_____for irrigation.

A.is needed   B.has  needed  C.are needed   D.need

解析：答案C.

此题考查的是短语quantities of+名词作主语时，谓语动词用复数形式，故选C.

 

2.The population of the city ___ increasing fast.

A.is   B.were   C.be  D.are

解析：答案A.

此题考查的是population作主语时，为一个整体，所以谓语动词用单数，故选A.
