Elif Oymak I have Germany in my childhood memories
Answered Apr 27
Elif Oymak

I have visited Germany back in 2005 when I was 12. I was participating in an EU project and staying with a host family. When I learnt that they were living in a village I was expecting something like this

Mainly because this is how an average village looks like in my country.
Instead I have come across this

I was quite shocked honestly. Not only because the perfectly designed infrastructure but also how developed it was.
The moment I learnt there was a railway system (which can easily be considered high-speed for my standards) for travelling around; I realized sadlythis German village is more developed than some cities in my country.
The regular village image in my mind completely crumbled when I saw expensive 2-door sports cars such as Audi BMW in ‘the village’.
Overall that experience made it perfectly clear for me why some countries are called ‘developed’ while others aren’t.

I was in Dresden Germany sometime ago and went to the McDonald’s to have a burger and a cold drink. Then I saw a young man ordering a beer!

In my mind What the hell??? A beer??? At a McDonald’s???

To my surprise he got his beer and I was just speechless. That was my first time at a German McDonald’s.

Germany why are you so cool?

Let me add a fun fact I am from Gujarat India. Gujarat is called a “Dry state”. It means alcohol is banned in the entire state.

No one can sell it. Legally.
No one can purchase it. Legally.
No one can have it. Legally.

I am originally from India living in Germany since 2014.

During school holidays I planned a day with my 8 years old son in English Garden Munich. It’s a large 4 sq km area with sprawling lawns lakes and beer gardens to spend a nice summer day.

Initially it appeared like a regular garden with some people relaxing by the lake some couples talking on the benches some families having a picnic and some just lying under the sun reading a book.

While walking across a certain area I suddenly started noticing many people who were completely nude.

Now as a software sales professional I have traveled extensively across the globe.

I have lived and worked in US and Australia for many years before moving to Europe.

I have no issues with nudity and have come across it earlier at beaches in America.

But the first few seconds of this experience may still count as a “surprise” because nothing had prepared me to expect nudity -

Even in Germany I couldn’t get the hired car I had ordered.

If I asked in my best German if they spoke English about 50% of the time people laughed at me or asked me back in English if I spoke English. Snappy.
Cost of living eating and travelling in Germany was surprisingly cheap particularly away from touristy places.
