Though I wonder that it's a bar code and not the qr code.

Yep. So basically what happens is that China is skipping over the entire stage of credit card / debit card proliferation where the US is in. They didn't have that, and instead of playing catch up, leap-frogged right ahead to massive proliferation of mobile payments. Wechat has basically monopolized the market. Now, I'm not even going to discuss the kind of deal they must have had with the government in order to gain such power. I just want to point out that, while they are touting the 'death of cash' being such an advancement, every purchase, every movement of every citizen is now fully recorded and trackable.

you don't have to use it for everything. so the pros are the gov knowing what they buy for groceries and small shit like that.

It also helps that they integrate payment for utilities. Something could easily be as successful in the US if the US decided to play favorites.

I was New York City in February trying to take the train to New Jersey and card wouldn't work on that particular machine because my card has a chip in it. As a Canadian I was mind blown that some places still swiped cards and no pin was needed.
