Can using other teachers' videos in your flipped classroom work? My opinion is "yes" and it can work really well. It would be unreasonable to think that teaching a class requires creating everything from scratch. In fact, I think this would be totally ineffective. As teachers, we should be drawing from great resources - and being constantly inspired from other ideas. Whether we are teaching a course solo or in a team, effective teaching is collaborative and draws from a variety of resources. As teachers, we have certain strengths and passions, and I believe that we should channel time and energy into these areas -- and draw from the great resources that are out there for other things. (Of course, as we develop in our teaching, we should challenge ourselves to develop in all areas, but that’s not my focus in this piece!) Personally, I love creating the videos, but I don’t think all teachers prefer to focus their energy on this aspect of the flipped classroom. I look to other teachers' in-class assignments/projects for guidance all of the time, since I tend to spend a lot of time creating the videos (and there are only so many hours in the day!).
Many teachers have successfully used videos that I have created to get started in implementing the flipped classroom model. One of the most rewarding stories came from a teacher who was assigned to teach AP Calculus last minute. She wrote me early in the school year asking if she might be able to use my videos in her classroom.
"The amount of prep work for the other classes and calculus quickly overwhelmed me so I started searching for some other solutions. This is when I found your videos... It has been a godsend. It has enabled me to spend my time doing the homework, figuring out how much to assign and freed time to research what I needed to do from an AP perspective. I have been able to make it work even though we are following [a different textbook]... I look forward to creating my own videos and incorporating this method into my other classes. Again, thank you so much!!"
The beauty in the above is that the teacher who wrote me this letter was able to focus her energy on the critical part. What we do in the classroom, in my opinion, is the most important part of the work that we do. The beauty of the Internet is that it allows us to draw on other teacher’s work – to inspire, to guide, and to use at times. I think that it’s important that we don’t forget the power of collaborative teaching, whether it’s with a colleague right next door or with a fellow teacher thousands of miles away.
