We are excited to announce the alpha release of standalone Zotero, part of the larger Zotero Everywhere project. Standalone Zotero Alpha does not require Firefox to run and is available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. Alpha plugins to connect standalone Zotero to the Google Chrome and Safari browsers are already available (a plugin for Internet Explorer is planned).
Standalone Zotero and the browser plugins are alpha software, and you may experience problems using them. If you aren't comfortable running early-stage software or are in the middle of an important project, we strongly recommend that you use the latest stable version of Zotero 2.0 for Firefox instead, available for download from Zotero's home page.

Zotero Connectors allow you to save items to Zotero from within browsers other than Firefox, using Zotero's site translators. Currently Zotero has to be open in order to save items through Zotero Connectors.
Word processor plug-ins for Word and OpenOffice are bundled with standalone Zotero. More information is available in the Zotero preferences Cite pane.
