I'm sure in a few years' time someone's 20% project at Google will involve analyzing the evolution of quotes and misattributions... until then it will belong to the realm of semi-useful procrastination.

In the meantime, this is an example of where the crowds are simply wrong. PageRank doesn't discriminate between truth and falsehood—it just identifies where the tide of popular opinion is moving. And once the tide has gone down the path of misattribution, it's hard to stop it.
