Why young Britons have turned responsible

1 Whatever has happened to carefree youth? 2 Public- health campaigns, better education and more hands-on parenting have no doubt had some effect. 3 Some young people are probably staying inside watching television and playing video games instead of smoking behind the bike sheds. 4 And Britain’s population is changing. 5 The proportion of 15-to 24-year-olds who identify themselves as “white British” has fallen slightly in the past decade, to about 80%. 6 Among the groups filling the gap are British Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, who are less likely to drink or take drugs than their white peers.

7 Just as important, young people have less money with which to indulge their hedonistic instincts. 8 Far fewer young people work than did ten years ago, because of the economic slump and the expansion of higher education. 9 Many more of them live with their parents. 10 Even those who do have jobs tend to earn less than they used to. 11 Between 1997 and 2011 the average weekly wage earned by 18-to 2- year-olds declined by one-tenth in real terms. 12 It is considerably harder to be rebellious if you have no money and live in your childhood bedroom.

1 Whatever has happened to carefree youth?

2 Public-health campaigns, better education and more hands-on parenting have no doubt had some effect.

Public-health campaigns, better education and more hands-on parenting have no doubt。

3 Some young people are probably staying inside watching television and playing video games instead of smoking behind the bike sheds.

Some young people are probably staying。

4 And Britain’s population is changing

分析 本句主干是Britain’s population is changing。

5 The proportion of 15-to 24-year-olds who identify themselves as “white British” has fallen slightly in the past decade, to about 80%.

The proportion has fallen。of 15-to 24-year-olds是The proportion的后置定语,who identify themselves as “white British” 是15-to 24-year-olds的定语从句,in the past decade是时间状语,to about 80%是The proportion的后置定语。identify...as...

6 Among the groups filling the gap are British Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, who are less likely to drink or take drugs than their white peers.

分析 本句主干是filling the gap are British Pakistanis and Bangladeshis。who引导非限制性定语从句,从句主干是who are less likely to drink or take drugs。

7 Just as important, young people have less money with which to indulge their hedonistic instincts.

分析 本句主干是young people have less money。with which to indulge their hedonistic instincts是伴随状语,which to indulge their hedonistic instincts作with的宾语从句。

8 Far fewer young people work than did ten years ago, because of the economic slump and the expansion of higher education.

Far fewer young people work。than did ten years ago是比较状语从句。

9 Many more of them live with their parents

Many more of them live with their parents。

10 Even those who do have jobs tend to earn less than they used to.

分析 本句主干是those tend to earn less。who do have jobs引导的是those的定语从句,than they used to是比较状语从句。

11 Between 1997 and 2011 the average weekly wage earned by 18-to 2-year-olds declined by one-tenth in real terms.

分析 本句主干是the average weekly wage declined。Between 1997 and 2011是时间状语,earned by 18-to 2-year-olds是wage的后置定语,by one-tenth in real terms是方式状语。

12 It is considerably harder to be rebellious if you have no money and live in your childhood bedroom.

It is considerably harder to be rebellious。
