Forbes

No.1

-Thomas Griffin, OptinMonster

No.2

-Daria Leshchenko, SupportYourApp Inc.

No.3

-Brandon Dewitt, MX

No.4

-Christy Johnson, AchieveIt

No.5

-Abishek Surana Rajendra, Course Hero

No.6

-Bhavna Juneja, Infinity, a Stamford Technology Company

No.7

-Geoff Webb, PROS

No.8

-Ilia Sotnikov, Netwrix

No.9

Low-Code(简代码)开发优先

-Katherine Kostereva, Creatio (前身bpm’online)

No.10

—Daniela Moody, Ursa Space

No.11

—Terence Jackson, Thycotic

No.12

—Evan Kohn, Pypestream

No.13

Seth Noble, Data Expedition, Inc.

No.14

Steve Pao, Hillwork, LLC

Forbes Technology Council COUNCIL POST

POST WRITTEN BY

Expert Panel, Forbes Technology Council

Successful CIOs, CTOs & executives from Forbes Technology Council offer firsthand insights on tech & business.

Everyone wants to start the new year off on the right foot. Whether you want to establish a new goal or continue the positive trajectory of a current one, a strong start to Q1 can set you up for a great remainder of the year. What you need is a plan to make it happen.

As successful leaders in the tech field, the members of Forbes Technology Council know how to set and achieve both short-term and long-term business goals. Below, they share 14 tips to help you and your team nail your Q1 tech goals.

Forbes Technology Council members share strategies for meeting and exceeding your tech team's first quarter goals.

No.1

Do Weekly Goal Check-Ins

If you want to accomplish your Q1 goals, you need to keep track of and stay on top of them. At our company, we have company meetings each week and each team member reports on whether they're on track or off track with their Q1 goals. This helps make sure everyone is focusing on nailing their goals and keeps everyone else on the team up-to-date as well. Thomas Griffin, OptinMonster

No.2

Reevaluate And Adapt

It is important to always reevaluate your goals, even if that goal was your New Year’s resolution. Being able to adapt to new challenges and change the course of development is a valuable trait for any successful leader, especially in the tech industry where changes are happening at a rapid speed. -Daria Leshchenko, SupportYourApp Inc.

No.3

Embrace The Unexpected

Prioritize what's important and plan for the unexpected. Oftentimes, the greatest value you or your team will create will be an opportunity that was unforeseen when you mapped out your plan. Empower your teams to split their time 50/50 between the planned and unplanned opportunities, exploring the unexpected and innovating in real-time. Brandon Dewitt, MX

No.4

Align Tech Goals To Overarching Goals

The best way to nail Q1 tech goals is to make sure they're directly aligned to support overall organizational goals. To earn the right to prioritize and use sufficient resources, you have to be able to draw a direct link to how your actions are moving the needle company-wide. You must find a way to draw out your initiatives on a top-down tree, so your tech goals are visibly aligned to big initiatives. Christy Johnson, AchieveIt

No.5

Know Your Limits

There is a fine line between setting achievable goals and being overly optimistic. Understanding whether a goal is achievable requires accessing resources, setting realistic expectations and being willing to adapt if things do not go as planned. Communicating frequently and openly with your team regarding set goals will ensure that you are on pace to meet and beat expectations.  - Abishek Surana Rajendra, Course Hero

No.6

Don't Repeat What Didn't Work Last Year

It is important to evaluate what worked and what went wrong in the previous year. Checks and balances with your team are key for next year's success. Building targets with your team's buy-in is crucial, as they will accomplish it keeping the company's growth objectives in mind. Continuous meetings with the teams are pertinent to ensure targets are achieved and all are on the same page. Bhavna Juneja, Infinity, a Stamford Technology Company

No.7

Focus On Your Outcomes, Not The Technology

Focus on the business outcome. I've seen so many tech-centered goals fail because they were exactly that, centered on the tech. You'll need support and alignment with a lot of stakeholders to drive any real change, so keeping your eye on the business prize helps keep everyone on your side, and that's what makes the difference between success and yet another expensive, failed science project. Geoff Webb, PROS

No.8

Know The Technology's Role

Make sure you clearly understand your company's business objectives for 2020 and align your tech plans accordingly. The main question you should be able to answer is how technology should be leveraged to help the company reach its goals. Whether it's CCPA compliance, digital transformation or a new product launch, you should know the tech's role in it from day one in Q1. Ilia Sotnikov, Netwrix

No.9

Prioritize Low-Code Development

Make sure low-code development is on your radar. Low-code/no-code tools help to address business needs with little to no coding required, which for organizations means better resource allocation. The technology fosters faster solutions delivery without a further load increase on the IT department. From customizing software in use to creating enterprise-grade apps. Low-code will help to nail your tech goals. Katherine Kostereva, Creatio (formerly bpm’online)

No.10

Be Proactive About Relevant Change

One of my favorite quotes is, 'Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change' (Stephen Hawking). We must recognize the only constant in the world is change. A multi-year tech road map that was brilliant one year may be obsolete the next. The difference between adapting to thrive and adapting to survive is how proactive we are about relevant change, each day, week, month, quarter or year. Daniela Moody, Ursa Space

No.11

Get Your Team's Feedback

For long-term and sustained success of your Q1 or fiscal year 2020 goals, IT leaders should communicate effectively and clearly with their team and solicit feedback. Don’t operate in a silo.  - Terence Jackson, Thycotic

No.12

Keep Customers Engaged

Some tech leaders may view unforeseen customer feature requests as a distraction to their strategic goals. Quarterly inclined tech teams must keep the focus on the big picture of delivering customer value in parallel to maintaining their commitments regarding sprint completions. Enrolling customers as design partners can help ensure the product output will effectively serve the market. Evan Kohn, Pypestream

No.13

Look For Scaling Problems

A problem that costs you a penny isn't a big deal until you do it a billion times. Whether it is a new product launch or tech that has been around for decades, now is a good time to think about projects that may grow—or have already grown—to the point where 'negligible' issues have become big problems. Seth Noble, Data Expedition, Inc.

No.14

Balance Short-Term'Wins'With Progress Against Longer-Term Goals

Q1 is always interesting because it comes on the heels of growth plans for the calendar year. Short-term 'wins' are important because a change that impacts January revenue can have 12 times the impact of the same change implemented for December revenue. Still, ensuring notable progress against longer-term goals is also important to demonstrate a commitment to strategic initiatives. Balance is key. Steve Pao, Hillwork, LLC
