PARKER:I heard about Liulichang from a friend of my wife's. who had been there a few months earlier.It is the artistic quarter of old Beijing. it is at present one of the most ambitious reconstruction projects in China.

LI:Yes. That is true, Liu lichang is under restoration but many of the shops are now open.

PARKER: What does the word 'Liulichang' mean?
（“琉璃厂”是什么意思？）
LI:Glazed Tile Street. The Ming rulers erected their tile works upon this site during the construction of the imperial palace. Others came later, craftsmen and booksellers ... during the early days of the Qing dynasty.
（就是玻璃瓦大街。明代的统治者在建造皇宫的时候，把烧瓦的窑设在这儿。后来别的人也来这里。清代初期，各种手艺人和卖书的也都来了。）
It became a popular place for poets and intellectuals. Publishers set up their shops and later came antique dealers and merchants of fine crafts, Now we are restoring the whole street to its original design.
（这儿成为诗人和做学问的人喜欢光顾的地方，出版商在这儿开了书店，接着古玩商和卖工艺品的也在这儿开了铺子，现在我们要把整个这条街回复到原来的样子。）
EMILY:How faithful is it?

LI.Absolutely.It is based on archival photograhps and maps from the period.

PARKER: Too many of these restorations of historical places look like some kind of Disneyland. I'm glad to see the fingers of Disney don't reach this far.

GOODWIN:This store doesn't look old.

LI:This is Rong Bao Zhai and it's the oldest establishment in the street. One of the first. It's slated for restoration at the end because it's a huge job.

SONG: At this end of the gallery we have two rooms full of originals . and beyond them, several rooms of excellent reproductions, We also carry art materials and seals.

SONG: Yes. It is called 'Lu Si' and it was painted by a very famous painter who unfortunately has passed away. His name is L.K Chan.

EMILY: I'm sorry to hear about the painter's death. The painting moves me. It's beautiful. His death must be a loss to the Chinese people ... not to mention the world of art.

SONG: That is true.

GOODWIN:And the horse in the middle of the wall. It's an original, isn't it?

GOODWIN: I've seen it reproduced around the world. I never dreamed I'd see the original.

PARKER: I Should think it ought to go to your national art measeum. it's such a treasure. By the way. what is it going for?

EMILY: Grossly underpriced. I'd say. this must be a work equal to the very best of, say, Rodin Or Picasso. I should think it was priceless.

GOODWIN: Yes. Now, coming back to these purchases, off the top of my head I'd say we're talking about something in the neighorhoon of RMB132,000. How do you want me to pay for them? I can give you my credit card?
