Mona Hatoum 'Hot Spot 2000'

Mona Hatoum : The Anglo-Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum is having her first solo exhibition in England at the Tate Modern, running till 21 August. It's part of a series of exhibitions featuring female artists that the Tate Modern's new director, Frances Morris, has set up to give them greater visibility.


Hatoum is well-known for her large scale installations and sculptures in which nothing is quite what it seems. Full of conflicts and  contradictions, her work explores ideas of gender and race and warrants close and careful attention. The works in the exhibition are organised non-chronologically in a series of juxtapositions that really get you thinking.

The first work that confronts you as you enter the exhibition is a large cube covered in metal iron filings stuck on with magnets. 'Socle du Monde' has an organic - looking texture suggesting intestines, hair or fur. A  play on the smooth plain surfaces of minimalist sculpture.


Further on, a giant-sized cheese grater doubles as a room divider.



'Lighr Sentence 1992'

'Homebound', is an installation made up  of various kitchen utensils and household furniture all linked with electric wire. As the electric current rises and subsides so does a buzzing sound and the light. Cut off by a barrier of steel wire, the observer becomes aware of an eerie sense of threat.


Hatoum's world map 'Hot Spot', contoured with  red neon, depicts a world of conflict and unrest.

A kinetic work made up of of a rotating steel arm sweeps slowly over the surface of a large sandpit simultaneously creating and erasing circular lines in the sand. It represents the never-ending cycle of construction and destruction. The work is called ' and-1994-2004'.


'Keffieh 1993-9' looks like a traditional Arab silk scarf with a distinctive black and white pattern. A closer look reveals that that the embroidery is made of long strands of human hair.

'I want the work in the first instance to have a strong formal presence, and through the physical experience to activate a psychological and emotional response.'

Hatoum的世界地图“热点” ,用红色霓虹灯轮廓描绘了冲突和动荡的世界。

由一个旋转的钢臂在缓慢的大沙坑上扫动,同时创造和擦除沙子表面循环线组成的动力学工作代表着永不停息的建筑和毁灭的循环。该作品被称为“and-1994-2004”。


“Keffieh 1993-9”有着鲜明的黑色和白色图案,看起来像阿拉伯丝巾。仔细看一看,刺绣是由人类长发制成。
