Prospero

You do look, my son, in a moved sort,  146

As if you were dismayed. Be cheerful sir,

Our revels now are ended. These our actors

(As I foretold you) were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air,  150

And like the baseless fabric of this vision

The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And like this insubstantial pageant faded 155

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep. Sir, I am vexed,

Bear with my weakness, my old brain is troubled.

Be not disturbed with my infirmity. 160

(4.1.146-160)

lines 146-8

You do look, my son, in a moved sort,

As if you were dismayed. Be cheerful sir,

Our revels now are ended.

words:

sort: state, mood

dismayed: appalled, overwhelmed

translation:

You look like something’s bothering you. Cheer up. Our music and dance spectacle is over.

line 148-50

These our actors

(As I foretold you) were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air,

words:

fortold: fortell, tell in advance

translation:

These actors were all spirits, as I told you, and they’ve all melted into thin air.

lines 151-3

And like the baseless fabric of this vision

The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

words:

baseless fabric: groundless/without foundation-structure

gorgeous: magnificent,sumptuous

translation:

And just like the whole empty and ungrounded vision you’ve seen, with its towers topped with clouds, its gorgeous palaces, solemn temples, the world itself—

lines 154-6

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And like this insubstantial pageant faded

Leave not a rack behind.

words:

which: who

faded: once faded

leave: will leave

rack: (1) puff of air, rush of wind,(2) cloud

pageant: feast

translation:

and everyone living in it—which will dissolve just as this illusory pageant has dissolved, leaving not even a wisp of cloud behind.

lines 156-8

We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep.

sleep: 死亡,Hamlet著名独白“To be or not to be”也是将死亡比喻作sleep

translation:

We are all made of dreams, and our life stretches from sleep before birth to sleep after death.

lines 158-60

Sir, I am vexed,

Bear with my weakness, my old brain is troubled.

Be not disturbed with my infirmity.

words:

vexed: upset

infirmity: illness

translation:

Sir, I’m upset. Please put up with my weakness. My old brain is troubled. Don’t be disturbed by my illness.
