This cotton spotty sun hat is just right for protecting those little heads when they’re outside enjoying the summer weather, and this one is as quick as anything to hook up. Whether it’s in cool light tones or bright and sunny colours it should fit the bill perfectly!
For my sunhat I used Rowan Cotton Glace, 2 x balls in 725 (Cream) for the main part of the hat and 1 x ball in 730 (Biscuit) for the spots, which are made separately and sewn on afterwards.
I worked with a 3mm hook and this tutorial is written using UK crochet terminology.
The hat is made up of 6 triangles which are then joined together and a frill is added all the way around the bottom of the hat.
Measurements:
Row 1: Chain 2 and work 2 DC in to the 2nd chain. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: Work 2 DC into each stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 3: DC, 4 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 4: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 6 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 5: DC, 6 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 6: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 8 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 7: DC, 8 sts.Chain 1 and turn.
Row 8: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 10 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 9 and 10: DC, 10 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 11: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 12 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 12 and 13: DC, 12 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 14: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 14 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 15, 16 and 17: DC, 14sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 18: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 16 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 19, 20 and 21: DC, 16 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 22: Work 2 DC in to the first and last stitch, 18 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 23 to 29: DC, 18 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 30: DC 5, DC 2 in to the next stitch, DC 6, DC 2 in to the next stitch, DC 5, 20 sts. Chain 1 and turn.
Rows 31 and 32: DC, 20 sts.
At the end of the last row do not finish off or turn but continue on working around the down the side of the triangle. At the point DC 1, Sl St, Chain 1 and Sl St all in to the same stitch. Now continue back up the other edge of the triangle in DC.
When you reach the top of the second edge, finish off and sew in the ends.
Make 5 more triangles in the same way.
Once you have made all 6 triangles pin them together and join along each seam by working DC from the bottom of the triangles to the top.
Finish off and sew in the ends.
Round 1: Working in to the back of the loops only, work a round of DC. Join with a Sl St at the end of the round and chain 1.
Round 2: Work a second round of DC, this time working through both loops as usual. Join with a Sl ST at the end of the round and chain 2.
Round 3: Working in to the back loops only work 2 HTR in to the next stitch followed by 3 HTR in to the next stitch. Repeat this all the way around to create the ruffle. Sl ST to join and chain 2.
Rounds 4 to 7: Continue working rounds of HTR, joining with a Sl St at the end of each round and chain 2 on rounds 4, 5 and 6. Chain 1 at the end of round 7.
Round 8: Sl St all the way around the bottom of the ruffle. Funish off and sew in the ends.
Using the Biscuit coloured yarn,
Round 1: Make a Magic Ring and work 4DC in to the ring.
Round 2: Work 2 DC in to each stitch from Round 1, Sl ST to join at the end of the round. Finish off and sew in the ends.
Once you have made your required number of spots, pin them in to position and hand stitch them on securely.

When not working at her nursery school she loves nothing more than a day of pootling around, with crochet, sofa and tea being right at the top of the list.
This is so cute. I am already wondering what it would look like if I joined the triangles in the contrasting color, and maybe the ruffle? So many fun ways to make this up. I have two questions. The first is just to clarify for myself that rounds 4-7 on the ruffle are one HTR in each stitch – not a repeat of round 3.
Secondly, my main question. How can I best make this for an 18 month old? Would you suggest adding more triangles and making them longer, or is there a way to make the triangles fatter closer to the top? Do you have measurements for this hat?
