Shanghai health authorities announced Thursday that they plan to expand a pilot program that promotes family doctors to all 17 districts in the city by the end of the year, local media reported.
Health officials hope the program will encourage more residents to use family doctors and rely less on the city's strained hospital system for primary care.
Under the pilot program, health officials encourage residents to choose a family doctor, or general practitioner, for basic medical care at community health centers, health service stations or village clinics.
About 2.09 million local residents in the city were using family doctors as their primary care physician as of the end of April, local health authorities said at press conference Thursday.
Local health authorities also plan to transfer more medical specialists from top-tier hospitals to community health centers to strengthen the family doctor system.
