Liu Yandong, a member of China’s Politburo and the state councilor, presented the 6th Special Book Award of China to U.N. under-secretary-general Joseph Verner Reed and five other winners at the Great Hall of the People on August 28, to honor the great contributions that Reed made in a large-scale project called “Chinese Culture and Civilization” that was co-published by China International Publishing Group (CIPG) and Yale University. Zhou Mingwei, president of CIPG and Huang Youyi, vice-president and editor-in-chief attended the award ceremony. Liu Binjie, director of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP), and Cai Mingzhao, vice-minister of the CPC Central Committee Publicity Department, met with Reed. Zhou and Huang held a special meeting with Reed and had an extensive exchange of views on developing further cooperation between CIPG and Yale University, as well as other U.S. organizations.
The Special Book Award of China was initiated by the Chinese government in 2005 to honor foreign experts, translators and publishers who have made outstanding contributions to introducing China to the world, translating and publishing Chinese books as well as promoting cultural exchanges. Twenty-seven elites from fourteen countries have received the prize to date. Ambassador Reed, former U.S. President George Bush, and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger are the co-founders of “Chinese Culture and Civilization”. They have played an extraordinary role in initiating and improving the project, in gaining international support, in attracting the attention of international peers and in getting numerous book publishing awards from the U.S. The jury made an exception this year and gave the award to both Reed and Richard C. Levin, the president of Yale University, both of whom are in charge of "Chinese Culture and Civilization" on the U.S. side.
CIPG made careful preparation for the award ceremony, including selecting nominees, international communication and reception work. Reed extended his appreciation to CIPG for its thoughtful arrangement.
