The original Chinese musical "Loulan" is based on the legend of the Loulan Kingdom that mysteriously disappeared thousands of years ago.
The story focuses on the tragic love affair between a princess and a commoner who becomes a hero while the kingdom is attacked by outsiders.
"Nobody knows exactly what the mysterious kingdom and its people looked like," says Zhao Guang, the producer. "All we can use is our imagination."
The musical features an original story and songs, according to Zhao, who adds there are a few exotic elements, but that modern music and language still play the leading role.
All the actors major in musicals at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. They have been rehearsing for more than six months. All performances will be live without any recorded music.
"I am sure that the live performances will be more moving for audiences," Zhao says.
