KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian police will boost security for election campaign events in the run-up of the May general election, a top police officer said Wednesday, following a home-made explosive wounded at least one during a campaign gathering a day earlier.
Malaysian police chief Ismail Omar said all state police chiefs have been instructed to increase security at venues of ceramah, or political lectures, after the explosion.
He assured the public that all are under control and vowed to bring the culprit to justice.
One party worker was reported to be slightly injured after a blast struck a campaign event of the ruling Barisan Nasional which attracted around 3,000 people on late Tuesday.
Police investigation found the explosion was caused by an IED ( improvised explosive device). A second explosive was also found at the scene.
A close race between the Barisan Nasional, or National Front and the opposition is bringing up tensions between their respective supporters. police said an average of more than 100 election-related violence and misdemeanors were reported daily in the first three days after the nomination day on Saturday.
Police have assigned their top federal officials to each of the country's 13 states in an unprecedented move to tighten security in the country's upcoming election.
Malaysia will go to poll on May 5 after the dissolution of parliament on April 3.
