北大清华医学生开烧烤店引热议 来自RoundTable英语新闻脱口秀 05:43

感谢实习生小朱同学提供文稿!

Heyang:From performing surgery to roasting meat, graduates from Beijing’s top medialschools have started their own barbecue restaurant. Apparently, to encourageresearch, they will offer you a discount if you are the author of a recentscientific publication. Let’s talk about this restaurant, is it good? What’sgoing on?

Ryan:Yeah, what if Grey’s Anatomy was in a restaurant, and they were like: ‘Oh mygod we are losing money to get chicken wings stat! Grrrrr! You know this kindof situation happen. Sounds pretty foreign, right? So when I say that Wang Jianand Cheng Si, top medical graduate students from Beijing’s most prestigiousuniversities, that is Peking University and Tsinghua University, have operatedhand in hand with sixteen other alumni in opening up their own barbecue jointin the capital. The restaurant is called “the Lancet Barbecue,” and ah, itsnamed after one of the world’s oldest, and best known general medical journals.Okay, so this has been huge…Uhm I guess since October 10th onChinese social media, people have been talking about it guys. Basically whathappens is, it’s meant… they give you a discount on your bill if you havepublished, or been cited in an academic journal. So what they said in theirpost is this discount, is meant to encourage everyone to do research, it’smeant for those people who have had their academic paper published and wannacelebrate it at a restaurant as well. So it’s mean to celebrate and encouragepeople who are publishing and maybe discovering new ways to help the society, medically.

Heyang:Yeah that’s really interesting. Also I think it’s kind of, uhm, bearing socialresponsibility in a way with this discount that is, you know, encouraging andrewarding those in your field that have done so well, and also, it’sinteresting how the restaurant owners have come up with a special way ofcalculating the academic discount. This part could get a little bit nerdy~

Ryan:Get nerdy, Heyang.

Heyang:Should I do that then? Yeah, so basically it’s the total bill, that is minusthe impact factor times ten would equal to the discount price. And the impactfactor is basically, you know, the citations, (Ryan & Heyang: the journalthat is published) Yes, and all those kind of things. Yeah there is actually aformula that they’ve come up with to give you the discount. So when you look atthis, why is it a little bit controversial?

HuangShan: Because the restaurant owners, one fromPeking University, one for Tsinghua University, and they are the doctors, futuredoctors. But they chose to open a barbecue restaurant. I think it’s reallygood, it’s meeting the trend of like mass entrepreneurship, and also I think itshows that every career should be respected.

Ryan:Yeah I think some people say: ‘You are either a doctor, or an owner of arestaurant, but you can’t be both.’ Uhm, but you know this person here, WangJian, when he was a young doctor, and a fresh graduate, he found himself shortof money: this was in 2016, and he decided that he needed a side job, becausehe love to go out and enjoy a special kind of cuisine. So I think maybe also hesaid: ‘Sometimes maybe we’re…if we were researching, we are very involved inour graduate studies or, you know, our academic work that we are doing. Thisgives back to them, maybe they don’t need to get that side job, or maybe theycan, you know if they are eating really cheap food because they can’t affordit, because they are doing research all the time, they can treat themselveswith what they’ve accomplished. Because you know what? Research, we don’timmediately see its effects, until one day, somebody says, ‘Yeah, we can curethat because somebody that did this study, that helped somebody else to createa medicine that benefit the humanity. So I know this is…doesn’t seem like it’sgonna solve all the problems, but it does seem like a nice step in a gooddirection to maybe treat those people who are doing big things (Heyang: Yes) inacademic research.

Heyang:Yes. And in academic research, often it is uhm…a lot of years of effort that isput in (Ryan: Yeah) but not immediate economic or financial reward comes in,and some people are making that connection that maybe a doctor needs a side jobas we know young doctors don’t get to paid a lot here; but actually accordingto this guy, he is saying: ‘Well, I’m too busy being a doctor. Can’t really doa side job. But it is my dream and I think it is a great thing to create alittle place where me and my colleagues can get together and also benefit maybethose doctors who have to work late night shifts, and have a place to…to sortof rest (Ryan: And eat~) and have a nice meal. Yeah, I would like to create aplace like that for RoundTable, one day. That’s my little dream there. Bye byeeverybody~
