The evolution of man is very slow. The instinctive reactions of the body are very similar to those of the cave man. In a threatening situation the body still reacts by producing adrenaline to increase muscular activity and physical strength. This reaction makes it possible to fight in defense in a more effective way, or to quickly run away from a fearful situation. The difference is that today we don't have to fight dinosaurs of saber-toothed tigers. Instead, the treats and aggravations experienced often seem to appear from within, leaving us incapable of dealing with the situation by physical action. The energy produced by the experienced emotion will instead be contained in the body. In the long term this repeated cycle of unexpressed emotional turmoil is very damaging to the body.
