Hey! Hey! Hey! 我是RJ,欢迎来到今天的「1MinuteEnglish」。
大家都知道中文里的“太”和英文里的“too”,都能用来形容“很多、非常多”的意思。
但其实 “太” ≠ 'too' ,“too”其实是中式英语!
接下来就让我来告诉你它们之间到底有多大的区别!
Too much 'too' is 'too' bad!!!
It’s time for 1MinuteChinglish! I haven’t written about Chinglish for awhile, so I think it’s time to update you on what to say, or maybe, what not to say. My article for today is about the word “too” and why it does not mean the same thing in English as it does in Chinese.
今天我又要来纠正你的中式英语啦!距离我上一篇关于“中式英语”的文章已经有一段时间了,是时候再教你一些「到底该不该这么说」的话了。今天的文章是关于“too”这个单词,接下来我会告诉你,“too” 从英文翻译成中文到底有多大的差异。
In Chinese, 太, or “too” can tell us that there is much, or a lot, or something. It can tell us that something has more than it should be, like:
中文里的“太”,和英文里的”too”,都可以用来表达“多”、“非常多”。。。等等之类的意思。目的是为了要表达“比原计划要多”。比如:
1. 我吃得太多了。
I’ve eaten too much.
2. 你开车开的的太快了。
You drive too fast.
3. 他说话的速度太慢了。
He speaks too slow.
In these examples, it means it’s “so much” that now it’s bad. You wish you didn’t eat so much, you wish I didn’t drive so fast, and you wish he would not speak so slow.
在上面这些例句中,它们表示的都是“太多了”,都是“不好的情况”。你希望你不要吃得那么多,你希望你开车不要那么快,你希望你讲话可以不要这么慢。(到底该如何正确使用' wish')
But it can also be good, right?
但事情也能往好的方面发展,对吗?比如说:
1. 你做的饭太好吃了!
You’re cooking is too delicious!
2. 这个电影太搞笑!
This movie is too funny!
3. 她的功夫太厉害。
Her kung-fu is too amazing.
(注意!其实上面这些例句都是错误的示范!!!)
But wait… there’s a problem here. The Chinese is fine, but the problem is the English. In English, too cannot be a GOOD thing! Whenever we use “too” we mean that too is so much, that now it is bad. By the way, I’m talking about the 太 meaning, not the 也 / “also” meaning.
等等,这里有个问题。中文没错,但是英语部分错了!在英语中,“too”不会用来形容一件好的事情!当我们说“too”的时候通常都是用来形容一件事它“太超过”,往往都是一些不好的事情。顺便提醒你一下,我说的是'too' 在中文里“太”的意思,而不是“也”的意思!
So in the first example, maybe the cooking is very delicious, but that’s not good, you only want simple and boring food (I have no idea why! But that’s what it means if you say “too delicious”).
在第1个例句中,也许这顿饭煮的真的很好吃,但它的表示的是:你根本不想吃这么好吃的东西,你想要的只是一份简单而又乏味的食物。(我也不知道你为什么这么说!但是当你说“too delicious”的时候就是这个意思。)
你可以说:You're cooking is really delicious!
In the next example, the movie is too funny, so funny that you don’t like it, maybe you wanted a more serious movie.
在第2个例句中,“too funny”指的是电影太过于搞笑了,你不喜欢这么搞笑的电影,那可能比较喜欢那种“不苟言笑”的电影吧~
你可以说:This movie is very funny!
In the last example, her kung-fu is so great, but that’s bad, maybe now she will always win if you try to fight her!
在第3个例句中,“too amazing”指的是她的功夫真的太太太厉害了,也就是说你没事最好别去招惹她,否则你连你怎么“死”的都不知道!
你可以说:Her kung-fu is so amazing!
In summary, just try to remember, that 太 in Chinese can be good or bad, but too in English is just bad. Get it? Good! I’ve been working too long tonight, so I think I’m going to take a break. I made some food earlier, but now it’s a little too cold, so I must warm it up. Have a nice night everyone, try not to stay up too late.
再帮你做个总结,你只要记得,“太”在中文里可以用来形容“好”和“不好”的事,但是“too”在英语中只能用来形容“不好”的事。懂了吗?很棒!那接下来。。。翻译交给你,我来去写下一篇”中式英语“的文章啦~~~
