The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. Everyone was in bed except me. Under the strong light, I looked sadly before me at a huge pile of that troublesome stuff they call "books".
I was going to have my examination the next day. "When can I go to bed?" I asked myself. I didn't answer. In fact I dared not.
The clock struck twelve. "Oh, dear!" I cried. "Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!" We pupils are the most wretched creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy.
The clock struck one. I was quite desperate now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. I prayed, "Oh, God, please help me pass the exam tomorrow. I do promise to work hard afterwards, Amen." My eyes were so heavy that I could hardly open them. A few minutes later, with my head on the desk, I fell asleep.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what "keeping up with the Joneses" is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich
lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and sta rted to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses" because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States. 'Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand' s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are "Jonses" in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.
For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish.
At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.
During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.
67.The passage is mainly about _________.
A.the high incidence of heart disease in some countries      B.the changes in people’s diet
C.the effect of fish eating on people’s health
D.the daily fish consumption of people in different cultures
68.We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths ________.
A.in countries of the yellow-skin race   B.in highly-developed countries
C.in the countries with high consumption of fis h
D.in the countries with good production of fish
69.The phrase “this relationship” in paragraph 6 refers to the connection between _________ and the level of heart disease.
A.the amount of fish eaten                         B.regular fish-eating
C.the kind of fish eaten                             D.people of different areas
70.From the passage we know the author is most probably ______.
A.a heart doctor                                       B.a science researcher
C.a supporter of healthy eating                   D.a university student

It is interesting to know what people different nations like to do best.
In France, when a woman enters a café or restaurant, she is freely discussed, not only about her appearance but about her pass and future as well. She invites looks in the street whether she is beautifu l or pain. There is no better way for a woman to get back her self-confidence than a walk in the streets of Pairs or Marseilles, and women really like that.
In Italy, people love talking. They sit about in cafés , exchanging news and discussing politics. They do not hesitate to ask questions about the family, income and private life of anybody who happens to be there.
The Swiss eat as a pastime, ladies walk into a teashop, eat a couple of ice-creams and a large piece of chocolate cake, and then leave, complaining about their weight.
For the Americans, the greatest fondness is to be the push of buttons. You push a button in the lift, you push a button for cigarette, chewing gums, stamps, even for a life insurance. You can even push a button to get married and another button to get divorced.
In England, waiting in a line is national passion. The English will form a line whether they have the opportunity. Long queues can be seen, for example, at stations when the train is practically empty and everybody can have a seat.

Dear Sir,
I’m a student of Senior 3. I am writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether to board in the school or at home.
Many of our parents an d teachers ask us to board in the school. They say it will be very convenient for us to ask questions whenever necessary. Besides, they think boarding will make it possible to make full use of our time in the evening, and that we can also develop the ability to look after ourselves and be independent.
However, we students have our own opinions/thoughts. On our way to school or back home, we can get relaxed. It is quiet at home and we can study efficiently. What’s more, staying at home in the evening, we are free to learn what we think we’re not good at.
In my own opinion, I think it is a good idea to stay at home in the evening. When we stay at home, we can arrange our time to study certain subjects and develop some other interests. As we are leaving home to stay in college quite soon, we should value the time we can stay with our parents.
Yours,
Zhang Tao
