冠词 (article) 位于名词前面,功能类似形容词,在句子里主要是对名词起限定作用的词,他们分别是不定冠词 (a/an)、定冠词 (the)。
· 不定冠词:“a/an” 后面跟着单数的、可数的、且未明确指出的名词。
· 定冠词:“the” 后面跟着明确指出或先前已提过的名词。
英文文法只要记住几个大规则,基本上阅读、写作就能上手,不过象是这类冠词、大小写或是介系词等等,才是藏在魔鬼中的细节,弄懂「定冠词」的意义之后,立马来看看哪些情境要用 “the”。
对话中的两人都知道彼此在说的特定人事物时,在该名词前面要加 “the”。
A: Can you bring me the blue bag in my room on your way?
A: 你可以顺路帮我拿那个在我房间里的蓝袋子吗?
B: No problem.
B: 没问题。
太阳 (the sun)、月亮 (the moon)、天空 (the sky)、地球 (the earth)…等等都要加上 “the”。
The sky is clear today.
今天晴空万里。
第几名、第几个,形容名次、顺序这些名词时也要记得加上 “the”。
Susan won the first place in the dance competition.
Susan 在跳舞比赛中拿到第一名。
最常用法是 the adj./adv. + est/st/iest… 或是 the most + adj.。
Jeremy is the hottest guy I’ve ever met.
Jeremy 是我遇过最帅的男生。
*补充*最高级的不规则变化:
· bad → worst
· good/well → best
· many/much → most
在形容词、分词、名字前面加上 “the”。
· the rich 富人
· the poor 穷人
· the Jacksons 属于 Jackson 家族的成员
· the French 法国人
早上 / 下午 / 傍晚 / 过去 / 未来 / …年代 / 世纪要加上 “the”。
· in the morning/afternoon/evening 早上 / 下午 / 傍晚
· in the past/future 过去 / 未来
· in the 1980s / in the 20st century 1980年代 / 20世纪
*补充*黎明 / 正午 / 晚上则不需要加上 “the”。
· at dawn 黎明
· at noon 正午
· at night 晚上
这些特殊名词都要加 “the”,并不一定是特定指某个东西。
· the piano 钢琴
· the rose 玫瑰花
· the Pacific Ocean 太平洋
· the mobile phone 行动电话
一个名词可概括世上所有「同样」东西时,不必使用限定的冠词。
Trees can provide oxygen.
树可以提供氧气。
早餐 (breakfast)、午餐 (lunch)、晚餐 (dinner/supper) 不需要加上 “the”。
Would you like to come to supper tonight?
你今晚要来吃晚餐吗?
向亲戚打招呼、在学校称呼教授、路上向老先生道早…这些情境都不需要加 “the”。
Sir, could you open the door?
先生,你可以把门打开吗?
街 (street)、大街 (avenue)、路 (road)、大道 (boulevard) 都不需要加 “the”。
Fifth Avenue is a great place to shop in New York.
第五大道是纽约购物的好地方。
各种语言的名词前皆不需要加 “the”。
Learning Chinese has become a global trend recently.
学习中文在近几年已经成为全球潮流。
这些单字前面不需要加 “the”。
I live in Taiwan.
我住在台湾。
New York City is a famous tourist attraction.
纽约市是著名的观光景点。
但是若该国家是联邦或是群岛,就需要在前面加 “the”:
My sister works in the U.K. (the United Kingdom) right now.
我姊姊在英国工作。
