MEISSEN Porcelain Manufacture: Surface Correction As the story goes, King Augustus the Strong ordered his subjects to find a way to manufacture gold. After much experimenting, royal alchemists finally discovered the next best thing - "white gold" or porcelain. In 1708, Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus developed the first European technique for porcelain manufacturing, independently from the Chinese procedure whose secrets were strongly kept, therefore unknown in Europe. After his death in the autumn of the same year, Johann Friedrich Böttger, continued his work and brought porcelain to the market, and he has often been credited with the invention. The production of porcelain at Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish one of the most famous manufacturers, still in business today as Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its signature logo, the crossed swords, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production; the mark of the crossed swords is one of the oldest trademarks in existence.
